Spain to extradite Argentine for "dirty war" crimes

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain said on Friday it had
agreed to extradite to Argentina an ex-member of a
death squad which tortured and killed people in the
early 1970s, just before the South American country's
notorious "Dirty War".

Eduardo Almiron, now in his seventies, escaped to
Spain in 1975 and was arrested in 2006 in a healthcare
centre near his home in the southeastern town of
Torrent, under order from an Argentine judge.

Almiron will be handed over to Argentina to face
charges of crimes against humanity and genocide, the
Spanish government's Web site said.

Almiron was a leading member of the Argentine Anti-
Communist Alliance, or Triple A, which targeted
leftists, murdering or abducting up to 2,000 people
before the 1976-1983 military dictatorship, during
which up to 30,000 people disappeared.
