MIAMI (AFP) — The US military is monitoring events in Cuba from its Southern Command post in Miami, officials said Wednesday, following Fidel Castro's announcement that he is stepping aside as leader of the communist island.

"At US Southern Command, as always, we are monitoring events in Cuba closely, in close coordination with our interagency partners," said Admiral James Stavridis of the command center, which monitors military developments in Latin America.

US military officials said they remain vigilant for a change of conditions in Cuba that might warrant the deployment of US troops in the region.

1. Last sentence in OP is missing a word ...
Should read; "US military officials said they remain vigilant for a change of conditions in Cuba that might warrant the deployment of US troops in the region, again."
