Student dies during demonstration
José Vicente Sánchez, the president of the Táchira National Experimental University (UNET) reported that Jesús Eduardo Bello, a student of mechanical engineering, was shot dead.

"He died during a clash presumably with people of the Bolivarian University," Sánchez said.

Students staged a protest around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday outside the university against gasoline and electric power rationing.

Sánchez requested an investigation from the authorities of competent jurisdiction and punishment for the people responsible for the crime.

The president of UNET claimed that he knew nothing about the reason for the confrontation, but put the blame on widespread violence.

University leader announces protests after killing of student

Roderick Navarro, the new president of the Federation of Students' Councils (FCU), Central University of Venezuela (UCV), announced a series of student demonstrations following the killing of student Jesús Ramírez.

Navarro rejected the statements issued by Minister of Interior and Justice Tareck El Aissami, whom he called "an irresponsible official and a thug."

"We reject the statements of Minister Tarek El Aissami who blamed on Tuesday the governor of the state of Táchira, César Pérez Vivas, and say that he has nothing to do with the killing."

The student leader accused the minister of Interior of using the enforcement agencies to repress the students. Navarro said that the student movement is indignant at El Aissami, who was, several years ago, president of the FCU at the University of the Andes (in the Venezuelan state of Mérida) and now is using the police to attack the students.
