LIMA, Peru — A 60-year-old woman has been trampled to death by a surging crowd at a Christmas giveaway in northern Peru.

The woman was crushed as hundreds of people at a stadium in the town of Chimbote jostled for free "panetones," a sweetened bread adorned with candied fruit.

Local hospital director Carlos Hernandez Neyra told The Associated Press on Wednesday that 10 other people were injured at the early morning event sponsored by the regional governor's political party.

A passenger bus has plunged into a ravine in the high Andes of southern Peru, killing at least 40 people and wounding some 10 others, police say.

Authorities said more than 50 people were aboard when the bus travelling between Arequipa and the town of Santa Tomas, near Cusco, veered off the road and tumbled 200 metres down a mountainside on Thursday, police captain Juan Suarez said.

"There are 40 dead at the moment and I don't have the exact number of wounded, there are about 10," Suarez told AFP, adding that the crash occurred early on Thursday in Chumbivilca province, about 1,100km from the capital Lima.

Police and fire and rescue brigades were at the scene of the crash and were seeking to transfer the wounded to hospital.
