1. How many disasters must Haiti be subjected to?
Is there anything left to capitalize on?

3. a couple of weeks of massive rescue efforts followed by several years of reconstruction
the infusion of foreign aid will employ Haitians likely by the tens of thousands for clean up and reconstruction over the next several years. I imagine some of the aid will be used to construct quality facilities such as hospitals that didn't exist before.

Contractors might even get paid and make a profit for doing the reconstruction work. Imagine that Mika. the profits or even the Haitian workers or foreign workers salaries don't derive from Haiti though. The money will come from public and private donations from other countries.

Once the reconstruction work is mostly completed and life has settled down in acouple or few years will be the real test of Haiti's ability to progress. I doubt foreign governments and charitable organizations will continue to bankroll Haiti indefinitely at least at the level during reconstruction.

4. That is a little short sighted. Where is the profit?
Better to evacuate all of the Haitians. Then PAP can be redeveloped as a tourist destination, with luxury hotels. Strict building codes for safety, which the locals can not afford.

The locals can be put in temporary housing, rentals guaranteed by the government. The rental contracts can then be securitized and "dead peasant" insurance obtained on the residents. There are mobile units available in Arkansas.

Get foreign labor to do the work. If they don't get paid, they have no recourse, just deport them.

The schools do not have to be rebuilt, they can be privatized.

I am sure that someone from New Orleans can add to this list.

8. I much prefer Quito to Guayaquil. It is difficult to get to Quito by raft,
and the altitude I have a problem with is on the ground not in the air. Flying into Quito you depressurize from cruising altitude to field elevation.

9. chew coca leaves maybe?
or maybe live in Cuenca which a little lower than Quito and is quite lovely. even the coast is rather pleasant, not overly hot like the Caribbean or Atlantic side.

Santa Rosa Honduras is nice.

or you can just stay in the US and be miserable.

12. profit comes from earnings after salary expenses, logistical, overhead
materials, administrative expenses. depends on the type of contract too. None of the money is coming from Haiti. or almost none I imagine http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100114/pl_afp/haitiquakeusobamaaid

10. I get it. And can't wait to learn the names of the humanitarians
who will be contracted to "fix" Haiti. Organized by the two men whose administrations did their best to take apart the Haitian public sector, it should be an all star line up!

14. why stop there? go back farther
the dictator/poverty relationship can only go so far. its not like Aristide did much.

but since you want to play the blame game, how about the French? if they hadn't brought the African slaves in the first place, all those people would not have died. but we can even go farther, the Spanish and specifically Columbus. If he hadn't wandered on to the island of Hispaniola none of this would have happened. the Tainos would still be there to this day enjoying their blissful existence.

16. the Viking settlements were wiped out and weren't rediscovered
until the second wave of europeans had been well established here. the current population of Haiti owes their existence to the Spanish and French during the colonial area. that's where we need to begin isn't it?

17. US Corporate domination dates from 1910. But you can say that if
man had never left Africa this would never have happened. On the other hand if the US had no exerted control over the last century, there might have been a functional Government in Haiti.

18. probably not though since before 1910 was no picnic
nothing would have prevented the earthquake but its obvious that you are eager to blame the US for everything wrong in the hemisphere.
