Honduras 'climate of terror' sees 3 political assassinations

Sunday 28 February 2010 Printable Email Honduras's new right-wing government continued to take a hard line on Sunday, demanding the arrest of exiled former president Manuel Zelaya and stepping up a campaign of terror that has seen three opponents assassinated in the last month.

The country's attorney general demanded the arrest of Mr Zelaya, who was ousted in a coup last year, for "fraud, forgery and abuse of authority" - but the former president, in exile in the Dominican Republic, countered that "judges who refuse to lift a finger against the criminals of the coup d'etat cannot judge anyone."

Meanwhile, Honduras Popular Resistance Front activists denounced Porfirio Lobo, who won disputed presidential elections held under the gun in November, for "creating a climate of terror to allow the oligarchy to cling to their privileges."

The coalition confirmed that opposition activist Claudia Brizuela was shot by unidentified gunmen in the northern city of San Pedro Sula last week, in what the PRF described as "part of the government's systematic and selective aggression against those who opposed the coup."
