Venezuela: Police officers detain opposition deputy Wilmer Azuaje
Español Ultimas noticias and English El Universal

Wilmer Azuaje, an opposition deputy of the National Assembly, has been detained in the headquarters of the Penal and Criminology Investigative Police Agency (Cicpc), downtown Caracas, after a quarrel with Cicpc officers.

The deputy was visiting the headquarters of the police to recover his truck, which has been retained for investigations after Azuaje denounced that he was the victim of an assassination attempt in October 2009.

This version was dismissed the following day by the Cicpc director, Wilmer Flores Trosel, who said that the investigations suggested that a group of thieves tried to steal the vehicle owned by the opposition deputy.

1. Assaulting an officer is a bad idea.

2. It's certainly not smiled upon here, is it? It gets one year to TEN YEARS in prison in the U.S.,
and it's a FELONY in almost all cases.

I wondered about that myself, Wilms, since the media source attempted to juxtapose assault upon a police officer with an assault on someone from the press.

3. And I ain't done being confused.
I got the sense that there was a concern (or should have been) that the car had been rigged to appear as though there had been an assassination attempt.

So much in VZ, I sense from afar, is about bringing down Chavez, rather than elevating ideas. I see that in the relative disarray and marginal popularity of the opposition. You wouldn't need to love Chavez to be unmoved by Venezuelan yuppies and tea baggers.
