OSLO, April 5 (KUNA) -- Norwegian troops will be sent to Haitai in response to united Nations requests, said Norwegian Minister for Development and Environment Erik Sulheim on Saturday.

Quoted by the Norwegian news agency, the minister said Norway will send military forces to Haiti in response to a previous request made by the United Nations to the Norwegian Government.

The Norwegian government did not respond formally to the request so far purely because of administrative procedures and the differences between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense in Norway on issues of mobilization and finance.

The Norwegian minister said that the time had come to meet the request of the international organization and has allocated an amount of 400 million Norwegian kroner (80 million US dollars) to cover the expenses of those forces in the first stage. (end) dbs.bz.

1. Thanks for posting this - I'll have to check this out further
So they are sending in military forces, huh? Looks like previous to this that Norway was doing peace and reconciliation stuff according to this excerpt from remarks by:

Foreign Minister Celso Amorim - Seminar for Peace and Reconciliation
14 September 2007

Speech by the Foreign Minister of Brazil, Ambassador Celso Amorim, at the Seminar for Peace and Reconciliation — Oslo, Norway, 14 September 2007.

"I believe there is room for other instances of trilateral cooperation. We know that Norway has been playing a constructive role in Haiti in promoting dialogue among political parties. This Seminar offers a timely occasion to look into possible ways for our countries to share experiences and plan ahead.

Brazil and Norway could also collaborate more with Haitian authorities in areas which need extra international support. Norway is already providing financial assistance to a Brazilian non-governmental organization in a project for the collection and treatment of rain water in Bel-Air. We should explore other joint initiatives."
