The setting up of a modern digital telephone plant in Holguin in April will improve the quality of this service in the region.

With over one million inhabitants —it is the third most populated province in Cuba— Holguin presents one of the country’s lowest telephone density rates, with 5.27 telephones per 100 inhabitants.

The head of the Holguin branch of the Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA), Arnolis Reyes, said that the replacement of the obsolete central will allow expanding the service to other towns in the province.

He noted that following the inauguration of the new plant, locations such as Guatemala in the municipality of Mayari, San Andres, Floro Pérez (Gibara), and Tacajó (Baguanos) will benefit from digital telephone services.

The switch to digital technology will greatly help improve this service in the province, said Reyes, noting that this was one of the most severely affected by the hurricanes that hit Cuba in 2008.

Darquiris Sanchez, head of the ETECSA commercial and marketing department, said that the people will start noting the improvements before the end of 2010.
