Flooding in Rio de Janeiro state kills 50
At least 50 people have been killed after torrential rain caused landslides and flooding in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, officials have said.

Twenty-six people died in the city of Rio de Janeiro after 7cm (3in) of rain fell in 15 hours, while 14 were killed in the neighbouring city of Niteroi.

Flooding left another nine people dead in Sao Goncalo, and one in Nilopolis.

Rio de Janeiro's governor has declared a state of emergency while the city's mayor has told people to stay indoors.

2. Just spotted it, dipsydoodle. This is horrid. All at once. The only way to have avoided the danger
is to have been born in another place. My god.

This is awful.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for more on this.

Thank you.

Brazil battles to rescue hundreds buried in landslide :

Rescue teams in Brazil are working for a second night to find 200 people believed to have been buried in their homes by a massive landslide.

More than 50 houses were engulfed as mud and rubble poured into the Morro do Bumba shantytown near Rio de Janeiro.

At least 170 people died after a week of heavy rain prompted mudslides and floods in Rio de Janeiro state.

The soil is still saturated and local officials are warning that there could be further landslides.

Updated on 09 April 2010

The death toll from floods and landslides around the Rio de Janeiro area has reached 184 and was expected to rise further as searchers continued looking for bodies.

Morning rain threatened to set off new slides even as emergency crews used excavating equipment to search for victims at the most devastated site - a slum built on a rubbish dump that was buried by a landslide.

Crews have pulled 17 bodies from the debris so far at the site in Niteroi, next to Rio. Authorities fear the death toll from the Niteroi slide alone could be as many as 200, though it is not clear exactly how many people were buried beneath the mud.

Surely hope there WON'T be more mudslides. This has been quite enough by now.

Hopes fade for dozens buried in Brazil mudslides

NITEROI, Brazil (AFP) - Rescuers Friday resumed a grim search through a wall of mud with hopes fading of finding survivors as more than 380 people are now feared to have died in Brazil's worst rains in decades.

Overnight rescue teams pulled 17 bodies from the mud after part of a hillside collapsed Wednesday, sliding onto a shantytown built on a landfill across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, burying some 200 people.

But the all-night search effort failed to find any survivors in Niteroi's Morro do Bumba shantytown.

Apart from the 200 buried in the mudslide, officials said at least 182 people have been killed across Rio de Janeiro state since Monday when the heaviest rains in half a century unleashed floods and mudslides.
