Venezuela: Public housing is far from fulfilling the promises
The government is building 2,800 houses in seven sectors instead of the 17,000 houses that it was originally promised.

The government is building houses in seven sectors of Caracas metropolitan area and part of the state of Vargas to benefit 2,895 families. Meanwhile, other 858 families own new houses after the construction by the government of new residential complexes in Ciudad Mariches, (Sucre municipality), and Terrazas del Alba (in San Agustín), according to data provided by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (Mopvi).

However, these housing complexes do not meet the demand estimated by the former Ministry of Habitat (now Mopvi), which in 2006 had plans to build 17,565 houses in Caracas metropolitan area and spent VEB 2 billion (USD 465 million) to do so.

For instance, the Venezuelan Executive branch of government expropriated in February 2009 lands owned by Coca-Cola to build 11 buildings where 176 families will live. In 2010, the building contractor has built the columns and part of the structure of these buildings for homeless people. At first, the government said that it would build 450 new apartments there.

In 2007, the government began to build Ciudad Caribia, in the state of Vargas. According to estimates, 1,500 families will live in the area.
