Amy Goodman did a really lovely interview with Miguel d'Escoto today.

“The United Nations Is Beyond Reform…It Has to Be Reinvented”–Fmr. UN General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto

One of the higher-profile participants at the Cochabamba climate conference was the former president of the United Nations General Assembly, Father Miguel d’Escoto. A Roman Catholic priest from Nicaragua, d’Escoto served as foreign minister in Daniel Ortega’s government from 1979 to 1990. He joins us to talk about the failures of the UN, the importance of the Bolivia climate summit, why Latin America doesn’t need the United States, and much more.

The number one thing that Latin America can do is till the U.S. to fark off, particularly when it comes to the drug war.

2. "it’s not only the opposition; it’s the United States with the opposition"
It's wonderful hearing him say this! Also, "One day, we were hoping—really, I was really hoping always that the day will come when the United States would become a democracy."

When are people going to wake up? Would it be all that hard for them to stop promoting evil, and supporting what's right? It would for the idiots among us, and they seem to be the ones with the loudest voices.

Isn't it funny the right-wing has convinced these fools that the U.N. doesn't serve "U.S." interests? Unbelievable.

Hope there are many people internationally who have listed to former President Father Miguel d’Escoto. I suspect it's known everywhere else.

The U.S. population has been the target audience for bogus "news" "information."

4. Most of the wingnuttery believes the UN is where "them people"
take our money and tell us how to live. The ignorance is astonishing.

And what he said about our media is right on. I hope he finds a forum where he can continue speaking because he is so knowledgable and has a remarkable skill for communicating complexity.

6. Yes, it's so important his impact in our world isn't finished since he's left the U.N. Presidency.
Hope it works for him that having BEEN the President he will be able to have a far wider reach than he did previously.

Now that people recognize his name, the smart ones among us will surely want to know what he's saying, and will say, since his field of experience is deep and wide. It's wonderful knowing that one way or another he was able to preside at the U.N.

Of course, as we do know, from our Bagger Nut Nation, the U.N. IS a "sinister" presence in the world, being all commie "and such!"

5. It's because..
The UN, via the US, serves the interests of a small wealthy elite. These people, The Goldman Sachs partners for example, are not R's or D's. Some of them become noted D's (example: Robert Rubin) so they can run the country when there is a Democratic President. Others become prominent R's (Hank Paulson) so they can control the control when there is a Republican president.

The primary goal is to sell stuff to 3rd world countries backed up by the loans of the big banks. They do this through the World Bank, IMF, etc.

Of course this is all well documented in confessions of an economic hitman.

So Democrats of course see the people of the 3rd world not benefiting at all from this, yet being stuck with the debt repayment. The wingnuts see these connections between various global entities as being a threat to our sovereignty. In a sense they are correct, as these entities do in fact have the goal of putting all people, organizations, and countries underneath the agenda of a relatively few number of people and corporations. Of course they don't quite understand whats going on.
