Honduras president shuns foreign summit amid boycott threats
06 May 2010, 22:12 CET

(TEGUCIGALPA) - Honduran President Porfirio Lobo will avoid an EU-Latin America summit in Spain this month, in the face of a boycott threat from many in South America, his foreign minister said on Thursday.

Lobo, who was elected in controversial polls under a coup-backed regime last November, already said that he would not attend the May 17-18 meeting if his presence would undermine it.

Honduran Foreign Minister Mario Canahuati said that Lobo would however travel to Madrid for a parallel meeting between the European Union and Central America, speaking on HRN radio.

Shortly afterwards, a source from the Brazilian presidency told AFP that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and other South American leaders who consider Lobo's election illegitimate were now expected to attend the summit.
