"Cuba: My Revolution" tells the story of a 17-year-old upper class Cuban girl named Sonya, who is mesmerized by Castro's promise of a new country. Torn between pursuing art and medicine, she decides to do both -- art to satisfy her soul and medicine to help her country, squeezed in between her training for the Cuban militia.

She soon discovers that everything she believed Castro would do for Cuba has been a lie and it's not long before she makes her way to the United States, taking her art with her.

I hope this story not as simplistic as it sounds in the blurb.

Her background: (not exactly suffering from lack of educational opportunity)
Inverna Lockpez, painter, was born in Habana, Cuba, where she attended medical school at the University of Habana, studied painting and sculpture at the National Academy of San Alejandro, and printmaking at Taller de Grabado, both in Habana.

Why would she believe that Castro would do all? Certainly not from the Castros. Go back through the many Castro speech data bases online and hear for yourself that Fidel (and now Raul) have always said that it is the Cuban people who needed to do the heavy lifting. If they wanted health care, universal education, etc, etc, then they had to make it happen - politically and to do the actual boots-on-the-ground hard work.

Looks like she's disgruntled that Castro didn't do all the hard work for her. She needs a nanny government - so she came to the US to cash-in on the for-Cubans-only perks provided by the US nanny programs made just for them.

That quote alone is just more of the "Castro did this and Castro did that" (or in this case, didn't do) BS. {{Where's Mika with that scrolling message?}}

Every time I've heard/seen President Castro speak he always gave the entire credit for Cuba's achievements entirely to the Cuban people. Rightly so.
