Peruvian judge frees suspected drug boss, goes for beer with him

Lima - A Peruvian judge was seen having a beer with an alleged drug trafficker whom he had controversially just allowed to walk free.

Edgar Gomez Quispe and the suspect Teofilo Portocarrero Fernandez at a bar in the town of Chachapoyas, in the province of Amazonas. Two policemen and the security chief of the jail, where the suspect had been held, were also sitting around the table.

Gomez Quispe had just provisionally freed Portocarrero Fernandez, despite the existence of reportedly heavy evidence against him.

'It is a great disappointment over a magistrate who does not meet the integrity requirements to face such a situation,' said Enrique Mendoza, head of the Magistrature's Control Office.

Mendoza said Gomez Quispe had been suspended, pending further investigations.
