Anyone for U.S. military bases in Peru?

Alan Garcia would not mind it at all.

LIMA - President Alan Garcia said he is willing to accept U.S. military aid to combat drug traffickers, provided that this help is in the logistical and training areas, a Peruvian newspaper reported Sunday, citing an interview the head of state recently gave.

"On all matters that are humane and universal, I don't have any disagreement over sovereignty and patriotism. That is, if the Americans would like to put training troops (here), as they have helicopters, as they have satellite trainers here, it's just at the right time," Garcia said.

Garcia made his remarks in an interview he gave to CNN en Español which will be broadcast next Tuesday (report was shown tonight) and to which certain local media gained advance access.

The Peruvian president also mentioned U.S. counterpart Barack Obama and the economic aid that Washington is providing to the fight against drug trafficking in Peru, saying that the amount of aid is not enough.

"President Obama posed the same question to me and I told him that it's his fault because ‘you have put all the money in Colombia with Plan Colombia, and in Peru, zero,'" Garcia said.

Garcia's remarks (to hell with "sovergnity and patriotism") raised hackles over the weekend in Lima. It may guarantee that his uber-corrupt APRA party will go down in flames in the presidential race next year and push Fujimori's daughter into the presidential palace.

It's Obama's fault that Peru has become the world largest coca leaf producer, Two Breakfasts says ....

1. He has no pride whatsoever. What a colossal a-hole. Unbelievable.
The U.S. was casting about while Bush still was occupying the White House, and that idea was floated then, as they knew the base at Manta, Ecuador was going to shut the following year. If Two Breakfasts had wanted to ask for a base or two, to heave his carcass onto the gravy train, he should have made his move then. Trying to blame President Obama now is laughable.

Hope the progressive Peruvian people will start organizing to get out many, many votes. Surely they have all the motivation in the world to do it, just like Bolivia, Ecuador, etc. They already know what life is like with a Fujimori. Of course they also knew what life is like with Alan Garcia.

You've done a heck of a job, Two Breakfasts.
