Panama signs torture convention

Vice President Juan Carlos Varela Wednesday, on behalf of Panama, signed the convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading activities that is being promoted by the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

Varela stated that, with this signature, "Panama is agreeing to provide legal protection to persons subject to its jurisdiction."

He also said that the signing of the convention reaffirms Panama's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights.

"The prohibition of torture is a peremptory norm of international law," Varela said.

Panama is the 65th country to sign the convention, which was introduced in 2006.
