Those on driving tour of Cuba 'should take heed of local laws'
Tue, 28 Sep 2010

People who love getting behind the wheel of a car while they explore their holiday destination could do well to heed the local driving laws.

That is according to ABTA - The Travel Association, which states thousands of people are involved in car accidents abroad each year - and those on a tour of Cuba might want to take note.

Nikki White, ABTA head of destinations and sustainability, said: "Although statistically the chances of being caught in a road accident whilst on holiday abroad are small, accidents can and do occur."

She explained that many tour operators can help make safe travel arrangements before leaving the UK and adequate car hire companies can be recommended.

Indeed, travelling the Caribbean coastline in one of the classic cars that often line the streets of Havana could be the ideal way to explore Cuba and its numerous cities, all inclusive resorts and towns.

2. Renting a car in Cuba is usually a hassle, better to hire a driver imo
It's very expensive, the cars are in poor shape, and driving can be perilous, watch out for cows in the road and giant potholes..

Of course you can rent a newer fleet for over $100 a day, Mercedes, BMW etc. Generally you cannot rent the classic cars except with a driver. A good thing because a drunk foreigner would flatten a Lada in one of those.
