UNASUR sends a strong message

Do not know if this has been posted in the other threads, have not had time to read them all.

-----------------------------------

UNASUR held an emergency meeting in Baires last night. At the end, it issued a statement:

los líderes de los países de Unasur reunidos en Buenos Aires aprobaron una declaración, leída por el canciller argentino, Héctor Timerman, en la que se "condena enérgicamente el intento de golpe de Estado y posterior secuestro del presidente Correa" y subraya la necesidad de que "los responsables de la asonada golpista sean juzgados y condenados".

declaration read by Argentine Foreign Minister Timmerman -- "energetic condemnation" of the coup attempt and kidnapping of Correa. Underscores that those responsable be tired and sentenced.

Además, en el documento se advierte de que los gobiernos de la región "no tolerarán bajo ningún concepto cualquier nuevo desafío a la autoridad constitucional ni intento de golpe al poder civil legítimamente elegido".

document also warns that the region's governments will "not tolerate under any concept any new challenge to constitutional authority or any coup attempt against the legally elected civil power."

"En caso de nuevos quiebres, adoptarán medias concretas e inmediatas, tales como cierres de fronteras, suspensión del comercio, tráfico aéreo, provisión de energía y servicios", agregó la declaración leída por Timerman.

"In case of new coups, measures will be adopted immediately, such as closures of borders, suspension of commerce, air traffic, energy provision and services" ...

Hillary/Obama, the neocons in State and golpistas around the hemisphere would do well to pay attention.

1. It's official. They have a plan they intend to implement now. Great news.
You bet the State Department needs to make note of this.

It's a great step to take.

Recommending.

2. Lula: Coup attempt in Ecuador was "stupid"
Lula: Coup attempt in Ecuador was "stupid"

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Friday called the police mutiny turned apparent coup attempt in Ecuador a day earlier an act of stupidity, dpa reported.

"Today, the coup perpetrators realized how stupid they were to attempt a coup against Rafael Correa," Lula told reporters in the industrial city of Sao Bernardo do Campo, near Sao Paulo.

"What happened in Ecuador is condemned by all democratic presidents around the world. We all support democracy and Rafael Correa's stay in power," Lula said.

He said he had tried to call Correa, with no luck so far. Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said he had spoken to Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino on Thursday.

Brazil's Deputy Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota travelled to Quito Friday with the foreign ministers of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) to express the region's support for Correa, after an emergency meeting late Thursday in Buenos Aires.

The meeting in Argentina was attended by several president, although Lula stayed in Brazil in order to pursue further his campaign for Sunday's general election.

"It is very important for our region to have reacted fast to events in Ecuador," Amorim said late Thursday from Port-au-Prince, where he was on an official visit. "We will not tolerate attacks on democratic processes and on the civilian authority of a legitimately elected government."

3. all democratic presidents?
"What happened in Ecuador is condemned by all democratic presidents around the world"

Sound like Lula doesn't believe the U.S. was behind it.

5. He was surely more than a little involved in that situation. Jeez.
He got a very close look at the absolute nastiness of the golpista dirtballs, far more than he appreciated. He made no effort to conceal his opinion of them, and their dirty coup.

6. From Panama, as well: Martinelli issues another statement of support for Correa
Martinelli issues another statement of support for Correa

President Ricardo Martinelli reiterated Friday the government's support for Ecuador President Rafael Correa, whose government was threatened by an attempted coup Thursday by police.

"We support President Correa and believe that any attempted coup is out of place in Latin America," Martinelli said.

The Panamanian president was unable to speak directly to his Ecuadorian counterpart because of the unrest.

Correa was being held under heavy guard in a hospital, but made a public appearance Thursday evening to denounce the coup attempt.

It was spearheaded by police officers upset at a failure by the government to pay them promised bonuses.

The military loyal to the president was able to overcome the police.
