Lucio G the ex leftist president was in Brasilia as an election observer. His daughter and cousing are police and military officials respectively and particpated in the rescue operation. Correa is accusing Gutierrz of being behind the "coup".

Gutierrez affirmed that the Sociedad Patriotica never maintained contac with the police; he said that the the dialogue, since several months, was between the police and military with the congressmen of PAIS, Rafa's party, asking them not to eliminate their rights and benefits for awards and promotions.

La subteniente Karina Gutiérrez Bohórquez y el mayor del Ejército Robert Vargas Borbúa, hija y primo del ex mandatario Lucio Gutiérrez, respectivamente, participaron el jueves en el operativo de rescate del presidente de la República, Rafael Correa, quien permaneció más de nueve horas retenido en el Hospital de la Policía.

Así lo reveló ayer el asambleísta Gilmar Gutiérrez, de Sociedad Patriótica, quien rechazó las acusaciones del Primer Mandatario sobre que su hermano, Lucio, y varios militantes de Sociedad Patriótica estarían detrás de la insubordinación policial que puso en riesgo el estado democrático del país.

Afirmó que es “cuento viejo” del Gobierno acusar a Lucio de conspirador.

A su juicio, “lo único que ha creado el régimen (refiriéndose a su hermano) es un ser omnipotente, porque si protestan los indígenas, los mineros, los universitarios, los servidores públicos, asegura que atrás de todo está Lucio Gutiérrez”.

El ex mandatario, quien se encuentra en Brasil observando las elecciones de mañana, rechazó “de manera categórica las acusaciones falsas, temerarias y cobardes” de Correa, quien dijo que personas de su entorno incitaron a las protestas con el fin de crear el clima para un golpe de Estado.

“No hubo ningún intento de golpe, sino una protesta de policías a los que no les alcanza el salario y que fue usada por el presidente Correa para presentarse como víctima y esconder los escándalos de corrupción” en su gobierno, afirmó el ex coronel a la agencia Efe.

Agregó que Correa “magnificó” los hechos al desplazarse al cuartel donde se habían amotinado “unos cuantos policías rasos” y actuó como “un matón de barrio” al enfrentar una protesta “a los gritos” y en forma “irascible” e “intolerante”.

“Eso lo habría resuelto un mayor, un capitán o un ministro, pero no era un asunto para el Presidente”, que vio la oportunidad de “sacarle provecho mediático” a la protesta, sostuvo Gutiérrez.

Su hermano Gilmar emplazó al Gobierno a mostrar las pruebas que revelen que Sociedad Patriótica está atrás de una supuesta conspiración.

El Jefe del Comando Conjunto de las Fuerzas Armadas –añadió – fue claro al señalar que la única responsable de la rebelión es la decisión asumida por la Asamblea y el Gobierno de imponer una Ley de Servicio Público que afectaba a policías y militares, expresó Gilmar.

Afirmó que Sociedad Patriótica nunca mantuvo contacto con los policías; dijo que los diálogos que mantenían, hace varios meses, los policías y militares eran precisamente con asambleístas de PAIS, pidiendo que no se eliminen sus derechos y bonificaciones por condecoraciones y ascensos.

Resaltó que a lo mejor el Presidente de la República no conoce la honorabilidad de la familia Gutiérrez Borbúa, pues precisamente el mayor del Ejército Robert Gutiérrez Borbúa y la subteniente Karina Gutiérrez Bohórquez, primo hermano y mi sobrina, estuvieron en el rescate de Correa.

“Nuestros familiares estuvieron en el rescate”, insistió Gutiérrez, y además dijo que es raro ese secuestro porque el Primer Mandatario seguía despachando, recibiendo visitas de los ministros y dando órdenes a los asambleístas de que no lleguen a ningún consenso con quienes protestaban por una decisión arbitraria.

Galo Lara, asambleísta de Sociedad Patriótica, expresó que su partido espera que Correa termine su mandato en democracia y también rechazó cualquier vinculación con lo sucedido el jueves pasado.

1. And you're just taking it on faith that these Gutierrez relatives were not spies or

sleeper agents to be activated if the coup succeeded?

Gutierrez likes to play both sides of the fence. He purports to be a leftist but supported the FTAA, and World Bank/IMF -U.S. "neoliberal" policies that ruined so many economies in Latin America, including Ecuador's. He ran against Correa in 2009 and got less than a third of the vote. This is why. He is not really a leftist. He has a duplicitous character, and it would not surprise me at all if he had trusted people (relatives) close to these events, pretending to be one thing, but intending to switch over, and organize Lucio's welcome back from Brazil at one of the coupster-seized airports, if the coup had succeeded. (And it's quite interesting that they seized 3 airports, over "medals and bonuses." Something doesn't add up there.)

I don't know this for sure. His daughter and his cousin may be quite upright, loyal Ecuadorans, who play by the rules. But, with the coup foiled, would this not be exactly what they WOULD say, if they had been preparing to replace the elected president with Lucio Gutierrez, and had participated in the rescue as COVER?

I believe that Correa has said that the "honor guard" including police that escorted him from the hospital had been infiltrated. Shots were fired hitting his car. There were snipers on the buildings shooting at the army. He did not say who the infiltrators were, just that "we know where they are from." Could be these Gutierrez relatives. Don't know yet. But I would sure hesitate to push their story as true, until more is known, since the CHIEF BENEFICIARY of this coup, had it succeeded, would likely have been Lucio Gutierrez.
