Ecuador: 46 officers detained for police revolt

QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuador's interior minister says 46 police officers have been detained for alleged participation in the police revolt against President Rafael Correa that claimed five lives.

The minister, Gustavo Jalkh, also says prosecutors have voice recordings that indicate last Thursday's insurrection went far beyond a spontaneous revolt by officers upset by a new law that would strip them of promotion bonuses.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that they detained a retired army major who was at Quito's main police barracks when rebellious police roughed up and tear gassed the president.

1. I'll bet it's the guy CNN just mentioned, a friend of former President Guttierez!
Police discussed killing Ecuador's president, radio transmissions showBy the CNN Wire Staff
October 6, 2010 -- Updated 1901 GMT (0301 HKT)

~snip~
Fifty police officers have been arrested, the Andes agency said Wednesday.

Among those arrested was retired army Maj. Fidel Araujo, who was seen in a video instigating the protesters, Andes said.

Araujo has denied any connection with the uprising, said CNN affiliate Ecuavisa TV.

Araujo is connected to the Patriotic Society political party, led by former President Lucio Gutierrez, Ecuavisa said.

The suspects are being held for 48 hours while authorities determine whether to file charges.

Correa has said Gutierrez, who was president from 2003 to 2005, was behind the uprising.

Gutierrez told CNN en Espanol last week he was not involved. He has been out of the country but was expected to return to Ecuador on Wednesday.

2. Thanks, Judi! Truth dribbing out as it always does.
But the corporate media will find a way to still make this a "debate", no doubt.

3. They'll blow right past it, as if nothing had happened, and focus on something completely unrelated.
We shouldn't hold our breath until they publish anything on the real elements of this attempted assassination and coup.

It's all in a day's work for dedicated un-journalists.

4. Ninety days in the hoosegow for Fidel Araujo

Fidel Araujo at the scene last Thursday.

Retired milico (major), close to Lucio Gutierrez, leader of the Patriotic Society Party, which Correa has accused of being behind the coup attempt.

Judge sent Araujo to the pokey for the next 90 days while an investigation into charges against him of instigating rebellion is conducted. He could spend two to five years in prison if convicted.

At his hearing today, he said he was innocent ....

Btw, Gutierrez was to have returned to Ecuador today, but have seen nothing so far.

6. He was calling Lucio to tell him

that Correa had kicked himself on his own operated knee, tore off his gas mask to choke on tear gas, then kidnapped himself into the police hospital where he held himself hostage until the army came and heroically rescued him from himself.

8. Number of detained cops is growing

Army troops guard cops suspected of taking part in the rebellion. Quito media now reports 260 cops have been detained. Note police are in civilian clothes, their uniforms and weapons have been taken from them.

They will be appearing before judges in coming days.

The entire police force (about 150 officers) that guarded the National Congress building has been disbanded and some of the police have been relegated to far-off provinces (although nothing in Ecuador is far away).

Army is now guarding the Congress building.

9. It's a forum where we post political actions.
It was going okay for a while and then, it fell off a little. Maybe because people mostly post those things in GD in an informal way and they get more visibility.

10. Great to see they are right on the case of finding out who the cops are who were involved.
