UN: Detention of Venezuelan judge violates three agreements on human rights
In an unprecedented call, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, a body created by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, requested the Venezuelan government to resolve the case of Venezuelan Judge María Lourdes Afiuni Mora.

The Group considers that Afiuni's detention "is arbitrary because it violates" articles 3, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; articles 9, 10 and 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; and articles 6 and 7 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

At the same time, it forwarded the report to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Peter Sahlas, to seek "his cooperation with the mandate" of the Working Group to intercede with the Venezuelan government.
