Hillary's obsession with Cristina/Nestor

Singular curiosity

Tuesday, November 30th 2010 - 06:27 UTC

US State Department obsessed curiosity with Argentina’s “First couple”
Amongst the 250,000 documents released by the WikiLeaks organization is a cable that shows the intention of the White House of “preparing a written product examining the interpersonal dynamics between the Argentine governing tandem” (“ruling couple” or First couple”) Cristina and Nestor Kirchner, according to the published material.

The document states that Washington “analysts” were looking to profile Cristina Fernández de Kirchner by gathering more information about her and her policies. The profile request was from State Department Secretary Hillary Clinton who a few months later visited Buenos Aires where she met the target of her singular curiosity.

The particular document is divided into three sets of questions: mental state and health, and political views. The first section includes questions about stress levels and possible medication intake, such as: “Under what circumstances is she best able to handle stresses?” How does such a stress situation influence her advisors and/or the decision making process? What measures does CFK or her advisors adopt to help her cope with stress? Is she medicated? When does she best control stress? How do they affect her emotions during a decision making process and how does she contain tension when anguished? How is Nestor Kirchner gastro-intestinal problem? Does it continue? Is he medicated? Knowing his character, is there evidence he oscillates between emotional extremes? Which are the most common targets of Nestor Kirchner’s bouts of fury?

In the second set of questions curiosity is centred in whether CFK prefers tactic or strategic visions and if her approach is black or white, or a more blended one? Does she share the confrontational political vision of her husband? or does she try to moderate Mr. Kirchner’ approach.

Fill article (good read):

funny reference to the Kirchner "first couple, two presidents" and the "frustrated Clinton couple, one president and one hopeful."

1. Yeah, that was an interesting bit between Panetta and Cristina Fernandez, early on, wasn't it?
I don't think I've ever read of a CIA Direct apologizing in public before, for anything. Probably he had crashed some Argentinian bonds, or something. A CIA Director saying a country is shaky is not to be taken lightly. Could mean a lot of bad things, including that they intend to "shake" it.

It inclined to almost kind of like Panetta, for a short time--or at least to think of him as more civilized than the dirty dogs running the Bush Junta and the lackeys they appointed to things, like CIA Director. I mean, if we're going to invade at will, assassinate at will, imprison and torture at will, and go on sabotaging other countries' governments and justice systems, and covering up Bush Junta crimes, and running "Big Lie" psyops, and having massive secret budgets for God knows what awful purposes, the least we can get for our money is a little civility and suavity and a nice public apologies.

But I REALLY like Cristina Fernandez! What a firecracker! I saw her in action in a vid of the Rio Group after that little worm, Alvaro Uribe, and the U.S. and Colombian militaries had blown away 25 sleeping people at a FARC camp just inside Ecuador's border, with 500 lb U.S. "smart bombs." Lord was she mad! If looks could kill, that treacherous mafioso would be dead.

13. I prefer ugly and smart to cute and dumb
I don't know why people let looks bias them to support this or that politician. The way I see it, the uglier the better. I like Obama because he got where he is in spite of being black - so many Americans consider that condition to be "ugly". So he overcame this visual handicap to get where he is, and this means he's a lot better than most policitians. Fernandez, on the other hand, was the cute wife of an ex president.

Today, she's the cute widow. Her poll ratings are up, but long term her political cause is weak even though Argentina's economy is growing (the crisis seems to be nearly over execept in Venezuela and Haiti).

The Peronistas already lost in Congress, and there are serious structural problems with the economy - for example, the latest reports show the cattle entering feed lots is about 50 % of what it should be at this time of the year. Prices are up as the world begins to consume again, but the unit volume is headed down, because the government has discouraged production by the private sector.

The government is so worried, they invited the IMF to visit them and give them advice on how to restructure their inflation index (which is rigged to underestimate inflation). They need to get squared with the IMF to see if they somehow can get to borrow money again.

3. the title of the OP isn't the same as the article referenced
but I wouldn't doubt that Clinton is jealous. more for the fact that she is president rather than because of her obvious physical attractiveness.

4. Doesn't need to be
That rule only applies to LBN. I think that's to help avoid duplication.

Yes - jealous for both reasons.

5. articles should be appropriately titled, people can add in parenthesis
I've already pointed out the article was mis-titled, I don't think the rules prohibit that either.

I am sure the State Department attempts to psychoanalyze a variety of world leaders and not just Cristina. no big deal though, and I agree with you that Clinton is likely jealous of Cristina.

6. I doubt it
It's reasonable to prepare very detailed profiles of anybody the Secretary of State is meeting or is likely to meet. I don't think there's anything obsessive about it. And I doubt Hillary is jealous, the US Secretary of State is a lot more powerful than the president of Argentina. Argentina's GDP per capita is less than 1/3 that of the US, and Cristina was heavily dependent on her husband's skills to run things, so of course they were trying to pin down to what extent she did work as president, rather than serving as a figurehead.

Her recent widowhood has increased her popularity, but according to the local press, politicians are starting to see her as a lame duck - without her husband, she lacks the power base to be a quality presidential candidate, it seems.

As for Hillary, she may want to be president, but she won't run against Obama, and she will likely be too old to run in 2016. As for her politics, she's too pro-war and too imperialist. In a sense, she's just another neocon.

8. Autocrats are obsessed with control.
They become obsessed when they want to control something or someone and they can't. Look at the bizarre, adolescent reactions that keep popping up to and in the Wikileaks diplomatic cables release. These people are immature, they have the gravitas and emotional maturity of a 14 year old boy.

9. Yes, they ARE not interesed in reigning in their hostility toward people who won't defer to them.
They expect a whole lot more power from their positions than is fitting. Not really civil. Primitive.

10. Telephone rings. Hillary is calling Cristina.

to offer "explanations" about why Hil wanted to know about Cristina's "mental state."

Spanish but self explanatory

Blogger on same subject in English

---------------------------

So Hil is so embarrassed that she calls Cristina.

Telam, Argentina's government news agency, saying U.S. Embassy flack described the 20-minute call (dilomatically, that is a VERY long call from a U.S. secretary of state) as "very positive." "It was the fault of very low-ranking diplomats." Gotta spin it.

Today's episode reminds me of the classic Patsy Cline smash hit "I'm sorry, so sorry, that I was such a fool ..."

11. Great remarks. It was accurate in saying you'd have to be insane to support imperialism!
How true, and it's been a lesson well learned over the many years.

I don't know how Hillary Clinton will ever be able to look Cristina in the eyes again. The President has never been on record saying remotely close to that to anyone, we can be sure, about the Secretary of State. Sheesh. How sad.

I don't think anyone of us were in the dark about Clinton's politics. You remember as a young woman, she actually voluteered to work in Goldwater's Presidential run. Good grief.

14. Tongue- in-cheek Hil/Cristina conversation

when Hil called Cristina to apologize.

Hil: "Cristina, I'm sorry my cable asking for your mental status was revealed, (while thinking) "You botox psychopath."

Cristina: "That's okay, we must not let this episode hinder our governments' relations, (while thinking) "You bitch in men's pants."

15. Good one. It's a strange world when you get someone like H.C. attempting to undermine a tremendous
person like Cristina Fernandez at the most basic level.

I just can't stand the thought. Jeez.

Strange world, to say the very least.

H.C. definitely owes President Fernandez some deep apologizing, with some abject groveling thrown in.
