More fence-mending in Argentina by hil and company

Argentine Foreign Minister Héctor Timermam with William Burns, hillary's undersecretary for political affairs.

Burns showed up in Buenos Aires yesterday, carrying a "handwritten" letter from hillary to Cristina. According to foreign ministry sources, hillary told Cristina that she (hillary) "appreciated" that Cristina had avoided publicly "commenting" over hillary's asking about Cristina's mental status (wikileaks cable revealed last week by El Pais of Madrid).

Burns also said to Timmerman that the U.S. government, "as it is doing with other foreign government," wanted to apologize and appreciated that the Argentina government had not considered the leaking of the cables as important.

Now for the BAD news, Burns told Timmerman that hillary was planning to become "much more involved in the Latin American region."

The fact that Burns, the No. 2 official in the State Department, traveled all the way to Buenos Aires to personally deliver a letter written by hillary's dainty fingers indicates that the Argentine government (and Cristina) must have been really pissed off. That despite the 20-minute phone call hillary made to Cristina last week.

What jumps out is that hillary has not apologized for the insulting CONTENTS of the exchange between her and the U.S. Embassy in Baires regarding Cristina.

hillary and now Burns only have apologized for the LEAKING of the cables by Wikileaks.

1. What a catastrophe, I hope there are enough good people in Argentina to keep the wolves at bay here.

If they had WANTED that kind of involvement by the U.S. in their OWN INTERNAL affairs, they would never have gone to the trouble to cast off the filthy oppression, destruction, terrorism, torture, evil state murders of the US-supported fascist military dictatorship.

Looks as if Sec. Clinton is very sure of herself, sending Burns to deliver her threat for her.

I hope they will be able to stay many jumps ahead of these predators.

2. Hillary seems to feel entitled to Latin America.

I'm afraid she will shortly be disabused of that belief if she tries to meddle very much.

3. It's diplomacy, that's all

Sending a high level dude to thank Cristina for letting it drop was a nice gesture, and I'm sure Cristina feels better about it now. The US will of course continue to "meddle" because it feels it has to look out after its interests. I'm not sure what you think meddling is about in this case. They're not about to get too involved in Argentina's politics, other than to nudge them to isolate Venezuela and Cuba.

4. Sure hope so. Their grabby, primitive acts against OTHER peoples' countries

are going to have to be reworked. This country has behaved like barbarians behind the US citizens' backs, running right over everyone not powerful enough to fight back adequately.

Very cheap, brutal, shabby folks have been in charge here far too long. Mutants.

5. Mutants? Don't be naive

Human nature is to abuse power when there's a sense of impunity. Left, right, center, up, down, in any position you want, they are all the same. President Wilson was pretty far to the left, yet he supressed dissent and abused the law to make sure nobody could protest America's participation in WW I. He was just like President Bush, or whatever.

As regards "behind citizen's backs", that's also a little bit off. We had slavery for a long time, at the same time we had a Constitution which clearly said all men are created equal (I don't think it would have been popular to say men and women at the time). We firebombed Dresden, dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, napalmed Vietnamese, tortured Iraqis, and yet the average Joe and Mary Lou think this is just fine, or are too busy to worry about it.

Which means that, as far as I'm concerned, having Hillary run around asking about Cristina's favorite toothpaste is pretty harmless.
