Argentine leader would jail tax evaders, limit foreign land ownership, subsidize pregnant moms
By Michael Warren

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Argentine President Cristina Fernandez called for jailing tax evaders, cracking down on money laundering and limiting foreign ownership of land on Tuesday as part of a broad legislative agenda for this election year.

She said foreign holdings of land should be limited but gave no specifics, and said the new law should not drive away foreign investors.

"It's simply to make sure the vital resources stay in our orbit. The law shouldn't be anti-foreigner or chauvinistic," she said.

She also proposed making it easier to adopt children, and said pregnant women will be added to popular $7 billion program of child subsidies for needy families.

1. Cristina and the constitution

From the article
-------------
But Fernandez said there's no truth to a rumor that she would try to change the constitution to eliminate presidential term limits, and probably couldn't if she wanted to.

-------------

There was a weird article in a Buenos Aires newspaper a few days ago about this. One of Cristina's main supporters asked her to go it alone in this year's election.

The author proposed that Cristina not rely on the support of the traditional Partido Justicialista (The Peronist Party) or even on the "kirchnerismo" of her late husband. The writer called instead for Cristina to form "cristina-ismo," and to eliminate constitution term limits on the presidency so she could be "eternalized."

So that is why Cristina said there was no truth to the "rumor."

--------------

I suppose "eternalized" as Evita was and still is.
