Cuba, 51 Years after La Coubre Explosion

Havana, Mar. 4 (Prensa Latina) Cubans on Friday were remembering the terrorist attack organized by the United States that blew up the French freighter La Coubre in 1960, killing over 100 people and injuring 200.

The terrorist attack strengthened the Cuban peopleâ�Ös resolve to adopt a radical position on the revolutionary process started in 1959, and the invasion of Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs) in 1961 only made that stance more radical.

The freighter La Coubre docked in Havana port from Hamburg, Bremen, Antwerp, and Le Havre, carrying a large load of armaments purchased in Belgium in the last three months of 1958, due to the constant violent threats against Cuba.

That shipment was delivered by the Belgian government as part of a trade agreement with Cuba, despite Washington's pressure on the Belgian administration to prevent the sale to the new Cuban leadership.
