Five injured, 50 arrested in Honduras protests
Five injured, 50 arrested in Honduras protests
Today at 06:41 | Associated Press

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Two Honduran soldiers and three policemen have been injured and about 50 protesters detained in clashes with supporters of ousted former president Manuel Zelaya.

Authorities say police were attacked with sticks and stones as they used tear gas to clear protesters blocking streets in several Honduran cities.

Teachers' union leader Eulogio Chavez says the police "used barbarity and repression against us." Many of those detained were teachers.

Assistant national police director Rene Avila said Thursday's demonstrations involved about 5,000 people.

1. The AP is dishonest in this story

1. The AP does not report that a woman teacher, 59, was killed. the lobista-golpista newspapers have dug out a video that purports to show that a vehicle struck her. But the golpistas cannot get their stories to jibe. One said it was a vehicle of the demonstrators, another said it a TV truck. The truth is that a tear-gas cannister struck her in the face. She died in a hospital.

2. The AP in its lead gives the impression that it was purely a pro-Zelaya demonstration. That is a lie. It was a demonstration by teachers (who probably DO support Mel Z) who are demanding their pensions be brought up to date by the loboista regime. The teachers were protesting too legislation presented to the loboista congress whereby public education will be privatized, harming students from poor families.

3. lobito has declared an education emergency and up to 3,000 teachers could be fired with no pay. talks are to resume on Monday to try to defuse the situation.

-------------------

Moral: Do not trust the AP reporting from Honduras. It merely parrots the golpista newspapers el heraldo and la prensa.

2. So sorry AP chooses to manipulate reality for us. Don't need lies when we're looking for the facts.
What a shame the facts always point to truths which show the oligarchs haven't really changed their ways since Iran-Contra.

That lady, the school teacher apparently really had it coming to her when they opted to shoot a cannister right into her face. I can't even remember all the stories I've seen of individual Honduran teachers getting murdered since the armed kidnapping of President Zelaya. What are citizens to do when their own government is run by criminals, anyway?

Nowhere to turn.

3. AP: 1 dead, 2 injured in protests by Honduras teachers

Pro-Zelaya radio station Radio Globo said Velasquez was struck in the face by a tear gas grenade then hit by a police vehicle that was spraying water at protesters.

Police Chief Juan Canales said the case was under investigation and provided no other details.

Miguel Bonilla, the spokesman for President Porfirio Lobo, said her death "was not caused by police," and Channel 5 television aired video Friday showing Velasquez being hit by a civilian pickup truck, which knocked her to the pavement and then ran over her. The driver fled but later turned himself in to police.
