BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Hugo Chavez is getting a journalism award in Argentina.

The Venezuelan leader regularly clashes with critical media, but the University of La Plata is giving him its Rodolfo Walsh Prize on Tuesday for what it describes as his work giving people without a voice access to the airwaves and newspapers.

Chavez's government has bankrolled the growth of the Telesur network, providing a state-funded alternative to privately financed broadcast stations across Latin America.

He met Tuesday with his ally President Cristina Fernandez, who is trying to transform Argentina's communications industry through a law that would break up media monopolies and force cable TV providers to include channels run by unions, Indians and activist groups.

The two presidents also plan to sign commercial accords dealing with food, transport and energy, and to visit a state-run factory where Argentina will build ships for Venezuela's oil industry.

2. i actually heard that raving lunatic, McCain, compare Chavez to Hitler, Stalin and Mao,

on national TV last weekend. it *almost* cracked me up. (not quite, given the gravity of the situation.)

can anyone remind me, why do we have psychopaths in power, again?...

4. Now that's truly obnoxious. Just what we'd expect. Wonder why he's yammering about Chavez, anyway?
Apparently these clowns hope they can spread the ill-will around from the anti-Gaddafi fever to someone else.

McCain might just as well go after George Bush. He didn't have a problem with Gaddafi, either.

Could be the reason we get sociopaths in power is because they are often the only ones who'd spend their whole life scheming, and plotting and selling themselves to get to "the top". I hope their time at "the top" is as awful for them as it is for us.

Bernama – Wed, Mar 30, 2011 4:52 PM MYT
(MERCOPRESS) - Argentina''s president Cristina

Fernández and her visiting Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chávez have underlined

the great significance of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

This was made during President Chavez''s one day visit here. Chavez is on a tour

of the region that also includes Uruguay, Bolivia and Colombia.

~snip~
The two presidents signed commercial accords dealing with food, transport and

energy and were scheduled to visit a state-run factory where Argentina will

build 16 tanker barges for Venezuela''s oil industry. However the visit was later

cancelled.

Under the agreements Venezuela will import thousands of Argentine cars and

600,000 tons of food and agricultural equipment, representing a US$400 million

investment.

Argentine companies will also transfer their technology and help build about 20

factories in Venezuela to manufacture small motors and refrigerators.

In exchange, Venezuela will keep supplying Argentina with oil and purchasing

sovereign bonds.
