President Michelle Bachelet of Chile to speak at Berkeley on energy pact

Chile's president, Michelle Bachelet, is slated to speak at UC Berkeley's International House on Thursday night about an alternative energy agreement she and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will sign earlier that day.

The deal between California and Chile is meant to promote collaboration in energy research, higher education and innovation. The University of California will play a major role in joint academic programs under the deal.

UC Berkeley's Center for Latin American Studies will host the event. The campus' chancellor, Robert Birgeneau, will introduce Bachelet, who is set to speak at 5 p.m.

Bachelet was elected president of Chile two years ago and her campaign stressed environmental protection and investment in renewable energy. Her country imports nearly three-quarters of its power.
