Cuba Criticizes Washington on Human Rights

GENEVA, June 9.— Cuba issued a press release Monday calling the Bush
administration the most serious violator of international law and human
rights in the world.

The country’s permanent mission to the UN Offices and international
organizations in Geneva said that Washington fears a review of its record on
human rights.

That reticence was made clear by State Department spokesperson Sean
McCormack who said last week that the US will be much more selective in
dealing with the UN Human Rights Council only getting involved in matters of
national interest.

The US is not a council member and its poor human rights record would
frustrate any attempt to become one, said the Cuban diplomatic mission in
its statement.

Recent statements from Mr. McCormack confirm the unilateral approach and
selectivity of the US government. They also show Washington’s profound
disregard for international cooperation on human rights matters, adds the
Cuban press release.

It further states: Those who take on the role of world police do not have
the least intention to have their acts examined. The rest is just pretexts.
They try to discredit the Council on Human Rights so as not to recognize its
authority. Now the only thing left is to wait and see if the new US
administration that takes office next year will follow in the footsteps of a
government with such a bad reputation, notes Cuba.
