Bolivian leader may survive recall vote

la paz • Bolivian President Evo Morales, boosted by aid from socialist Venezuela, is likely to survive a recall vote next month and continue his battle with opposition governors over leftist reforms.

Both Morales and eight regional leaders-including five rightist opposition governors who are demanding more autonomy from the central government-would be forced to step down if they lose the recall vote on August 10.

Morales proposed the recall vote late last year in an apparent bid to weaken the opposition governors.

But a recent poll published by daily La Prensa showed Morales and most of the rebel governors will win enough votes to stay in office.

Morales is appealing to the poor majority to back him and help him push ahead with reforms that would asset more state control over Bolivia's mining and natural gas resources and give greater powers to indigenous groups.

Reuters, your fascism is showing. Elected, non-guerrilla Bolivian governors are NOT "REBEL GOVERNORS." You are getting more conspicuous day by day, and many of us don't accept your filth.

1. 5 of 8 regional governors up for recall are opposition, the article states clearly

that MOST of the rebel governors would remain. a logical reading of this is that MOST of the opposition governors will remain. the sentence before that says that the recall is meant to weaken the opposition governors. "rebel" in this context signifies the governors seeking autonomy, it does not mean that any or all of the governors belong to a guerrilla movement.

the outcome for Morales is favorable, that is the reason he is proposing the recall, and with that he will claim a strengthened hand. its called politics.
