LIMA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Secretary General of the Andean Community (CAN) Freddy Ehlers Tuesday called on Latin American countries to adjust the development model to avoid social crisis.

"There is a lot of inequality here (in Latin America) and in the world," and half of the world population are living in extreme poverty, which would be an alert signal that the social fragility may develop into dangerous social crisis, he said in a statement.

Thus it is necessary "to start thinking" about the adjustment of the development model, which should focus not only on the economic growth but also on the welfare of the population in poverty and the harmonious coexistence with the ecological system, he said ...
