Venezuela releases recordings of purported plot
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 07:55 AM by Satyagrahi
Source: AP

CARACAS, Venezuela: Venezuelan state television broadcast new recordings Thursday of what the government says are current and former military officers discussing a plot to overthrow President Hugo Chavez.

In one recording, a voice identified as ex-Gen. Wilfredo Barroso says, "We tried to get the gringos to support us in December," either with satellite phones or satellite transmissions.

The dates of the recordings were not given. They included fragments of discussions between the suspects, who include both retired and active officers.

In another portion of the recordings, a voice identified as Barroso says state-run media could "be destroyed" while other private media would be left on the air — apparently to allow those involved to get their messages out to the public.

Tranquilo, mucha fe, ¿okey?

1. Never!
What - *OUR* government suggesting, planning or aiding in the overthrow of another sovereign government? And one that hasn't even engaged in hostilities towards us? How could ANYONE suspect that the U.S.A. would do such a thing!?!?! :sarcasm:

3. I don't understand this.
Be aware of the following restrictions when posting in Latest Breaking News:

1. Do not post news that is more than 12 hours old.

Check. The story was 9 hours old when I posted it.

2. Do not post duplicate topics about news events that have already been posted.

Check. The recordings (allegedly) showing US involvement in the coup plot were first broadcast yesterday by Venezuelan TV.

3. Do not post opinion pieces, editorials, frivolous items, or other stories that are not news.

Check.

4. Whenever possible, post excerpts and links from reputable mainstream news sources that are available online. Do not link to blogs, vanity sites, or blatantly biased sources, except in cases where reputable mainstream sources are not available.

Check. AP, IHT are reputable sources.

5. Please make an effort to link directly to the original source of an article, instead of linking to sites that have re-published someone else's content, or re-packaged someone else's content as their own.

I even made the effort to search for the original video and transcript in Spanish.

6. Do not post links to polls, petitions, or other action items.

Check.

7. Discussion of Israeli/Palestinian issues is not permitted in the Latest Breaking News forum, and instead must be posted in the Israeli/Palestinian Affairs forum. If, however, the news item is primarily about U.S. policy in Israeli/Palestinian affairs, you may post it in the Latest Breaking News forum.

Check.

8. All of our other rules for posting still apply, including copyright rules.

Check.

I simply don't understand this decision.

6. It's interesting that they mention December because there was a rumbling
in the run up to the referendum. Dirty tricks in and around the military establishment. Hmm.

8. It's a device which derails a lot of threads which might generate a lot of discussion,
for sure.

Latin American topics are all hot right now as Bush has been attempting to influence virtually every one of them from the moment he stole the Presidency.

You saw how they loved him when he toured South America. The streets were flooded with protesters, even in Colombia, to which he has poured over 6 BILLION dollars earned by U.S. taxpayers.

Chavez is important because Bush hasn't stopped trying to overthrow him from the first day. It's a matter of concern to any conscientious American, and it's an obsession to the fascists among us who in their perversion dream this country should control every single human soul in this hemisphere, regardless of their national boundaries, and their own rights.
