Head of group that blew up the CIA spooks was Ronald Reagan's guest
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 06:08 PM by IndianaGreen
The head of the group that blew up the CIA spooks in Afghanistan was a guest of Ronald Reagan at the White House, and was pals with the protagonist in "Charlie Wilson's war." Blowback!

Can you imagine how talk radio and Fox News would be doing now had President Clinton hosted Haqqani in the Lincoln bedroom!

How CIA was fatally duped by Jordanian double agent

Doctor-turned-bomber who was recruited by Americans to hunt down Bin Laden's right-hand man was in fact working for al-Qa'ida

By David Usborne, US Editor

Wednesday, 6 January 2010

According to at least one report, US military officials believe it may have been orchestrated by the Haqqani network, an al-Qa'ida-linked militant group that operates out of north-west Pakistan and has launched many attacks in Khost in the past. Ironically, the network's ageing leader, Jalaluddin Haqqani, was formerly a close US ally in the covert Afghan war against the Soviets. He visited the Reagan White House and was described by Texas politician Charlie Wilson as "goodness personified".

1. One of S. Vietnam's provincial governors helped to instigate the coup plot against Diem
by convincing American military and state dept. figures of its appropriateness, even as he influenced S. Vietnamese Generals to pursue military takeover. Pham Ngoc Thao, Governor of Bien Hoa Province and administrator of the hated Strategic Hamlet program was in fact a double agent for the Communist side from the day in 1954 that the Geneva Conference created two Vietnamese sides until his death in 1965. After having helped foment the "regime change" against Diem he continued for two years to sabotage the US led effort to maintain a separate, anti-Communist South Vietnam by provoking infighting among the South's rival generals. Nor was he the only double agent highly placed within the South Vietnamese civilian or military ranks.

But of course there are NO parallels with the Vietnam War debacle and our present glorious mission in Afghanistan. None whatever.

5. I seem to recall that Thao had an untimely demise
Boy, that's some throwback to the past in your post. Some people on this board think that those of us that lived through the Vietnam War are "stuck in the past." What we are stuck with is the realization that the US has foolishly gotten itself involved in several wars without a clue about the people and the culture of the countries we are trying to "liberate."

Liberate like we liberated the Philippines from the Filipinos in 1902. Our history books still refer to our glorious genocide in the Philippines as the Philippines Insurrection, ignoring the fact we were the invaders.

2. Conservatives and their pals in big buisness are traitors to America
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 10:59 PM by w4rma
Look at what they've done? They've destroyed the American economy to enrich themselves. They've despoiled the American environment to enrich themselves. They've lowered the quality of living for the vast majority of Americans to enrich themselves. They've led Americans into wars, wasting our resources and lives, to enrich themselves. They've made deals with terrorists to enrich themselves.

3. Ah, Reagan. Ya know, I thought it couldn't get worse than Nixon.
Then I thought it couldn't get worse than Reagan. I guess I'm an eternal optimist.

And now we're enjoying decades of blowback from St. Ronnie's Afghan adventure.

"Ronnie, I said, someday when Mercury is retrograde, you occultist chickenhawk republicons will get busted for consorting with terrorists. He just laughed kind of absent mindedly, and said something about needing to get more tax cuts for wealthy republicon crony fatcats. Go figure."

- Ronald Reagan's Dead Republicon Astrolger*
