"Rep. Chris Murphy vs. Lieberman?"
Rep. Chris Murphy vs. Lieberman?

By Aaron Blake - 01/07/10 10:26 AM ET
Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) sounds as though he may challenge Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) in 2012.

Connecticut Democrats are pretty set with state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in 2010, now that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) has stepped aside.

But Murphy is acknowledging an interest in the upper chamber, and some are talking him up as a Lieberman foe.

"As for my future plans, the Senate is something I’m certainly interested in down the road,” Murphy told a local paper. “But today my focus is on recognizing Chris Dodd’s lifelong record of delivering for his beloved state and continuing to do my job representing northwest Connecticut in the House.”

Blumenthal was widely thought to be a likely Lieberman foe in 2012, so his candidacy in 2010 opens the door for other Democrats to eye that race. Murphy appears to be laying a marker for two years from now.

Of course, he'll first need to get past one of two Republicans — Justin Bernier or state Sen. Sam Caligiuri, who dropped his own Senate bid this year in favor of going after Murphy — in this year's election. That may prevent him from being too forward about his 2012 plans.

1. Chris would be great. He is the Rep for my district and I can say
I have been very happy with him so far. He has youth on his side too...I think he is two years older then me, 36.
Caligiuri is the state Senator for my parents and an icky conservative but Chris is very, very popular in my district. Should not be a problem for him at all. I think Lieberman is very vulnerable here and with a young and popular candidate, he could definitely go down.

There will be no more stupid "Dump Dodd" bumper stickers in CT but I wish there were some "Loser Lieberman" ones!

2. Chris
Chris is in my district as well and everyone I know here in the Farmington Valley loves him! Could not agree with you more regarding those lame Dump Dodd Stickers. I listed to Ray Dunaway yesterday on WTIC and even those who hate Dodd called in praised Blumenthal. Even moderate Republicans love Blumenthal. I think it's his to win!

3. Yeah, he has such a good rep here it will be tough to beat Blumenthal.
I live in Terryville and most everyone here is happy Chris is their Rep. He could really give Lieberman a run for his money.
