Afghanistan war 'under-resourced'
Looks like 2011 is unrealistic as the target date for a US pull out from Afghanistan. The surge will be followed by yet another surge, another grand strategy, another American general promising victory.

On a personal note, if we truly want to help the British troops in Afghanistan, we should send them some of our helicopters. The British military suffers from a lack of sufficient helicopters to carry out their mission.

If you put troops in harm's way, the least you can do for them is to give them what they need to survive.

Afghanistan war 'under-resourced'

The international military effort in Afghanistan was under-resourced for years, the head of the Army said as US troops prepared to take over operations in an area which has seen some of the bloodiest fighting for British forces.

Chief of the General Staff General Sir David Richards said US President Barack Obama's surge strategy could see American troops playing a greater role in northern Helmand province.

He said he was hopeful casualty levels would diminish towards the end of a "tough" 2010 but added that a military presence would be required for up to five years.

Commanders in Afghanistan, led by US General Stanley McChrystal, are considering using US troops to provide security in the more remote areas of Helmand province.

Gen Richards said the new plan endorsed by President Obama would help provide an exit strategy for the Alliance.

1. Of course, we have not fully funded a war since the Korean War.
