We have turned the tide BACK in our favor ........ in the Virginia State Senate. :)

Democrats claim Cuccinelli's seat in Virginia Senate
Defying recent voting trends that saw several Northern Virginia Republicans win big in November, Del. David W. Marsden (D-Fairfax) won a special election Tuesday night to represent a broad swath of southwestern Fairfax County in the Virginia Senate. He beat Republican Stephen M. "Steve" Hunt, a former Fairfax County School Board member. The results were to be certified late Tuesday night by the Fairfax County Electoral Board and Marsden is expected to be sworn in with the Senate's 39 other legislators at noon Wednesday.

If that's not a mandate against the GOP I dont know what is! (heh!)

Edited because I forgot to say, "It is clear the electorate sees this as a referendum on the President and his policies .... and his purple tie." :silly:

10. I'm not convinced I like it.....
.... a President should wear a blue tie or a red tie .... or a blue and red tie .... or a green tie if it's St. Patty's day.

Gotta save the pastels for retirement! (ha ha)

the tie. Has one of his own and says that the President has good taste. :D Seeing Michelle, I wholeheartedly agree!

15. Oh it's a LOVELY tie....
.... it just doesn't say "Leader of the Free World"

(Hey, I gotta get in ONE Obama criticism in a term and I've decided this will be it. :) )

29. There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism - even about a lavender tie
for the leader of the free world. On the other hand, it shows our President is connected to the younger generation and isn't some stiff pol.

Young people identify with him because of his nontraditional ways. With that Easter colored tie, he's securing the votes of the next generation who love him.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :D

34. OK....
Now you've got me picturing a tie with "Leader of the Free World" emblazoned on it.

Sort of like Mel Brooks' suit jacket in "Blazing Saddles"

33. Not if their Republican opponent ISN'T....
.... but that never happens. Sometimes, a right-leaning Dem is the best you can get. I'd LOVE a right-leaning Dem over the No-mongers I have representing me.

Marsden, 61, a two-term delegate from Burke who switched political parties earlier this decade while serving as the head of the state Department of Juvenile Justice under both Republican and Democratic governors, won the 37th state Senate seat vacated by Attorney General-elect Kenneth T. Cuccinelli (R) by rallying a voter base reeling from big losses in November's statewide and House races.

Marsden campaigned on a moderate platform that focused on the two issues most Americans are wrestling with -- jobs and the economy.

David Winkler, 49, of Burke said he was swayed by Marsden's moderate political stances on small businesses and the economy.

In the final days, both campaigns turned aggressive. Marsden decried Hunts' "very bad judgment," referring to his views on homosexuality and sex education and Hunt told a group at a Fairfax County Republican Committee last week that he intended to "demolish" Marsden in the election.

27. Marsen sounds more liberal than I would have thought.

I think you would have to agree with him decrying Hunts views on sex education...

Ran an anti-choice, pregnancy counseling center that distributed brochures claiming condoms fail about one-third of the time and that abortion is one of the leading causes of breast cancer.

... and homosexuality ...

While serving on the Fairfax County School Board, Hunt was unanimously censured by his colleagues after he sent a letter to high school principals denouncing homosexuality as a "very destructive lifestyle" and urging them to expose students to former gays and lesbians who had rejected homosexuality.

25. Combined with the fact that the race was being called for the GOP long before Obama
even won the Dem nomination in '08. There was very little chance that any Democrat would have won the governor's mansion in '09. That doesn't take away from Deeds general suckiness, of course. He just made it an even more resounding defeat for us. :(
