Biden to meet with Haitian-American leaders in Miami

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, are scheduled Saturday to meet with Haitian-American leaders in Miami and with military and emergency officials at Homestead Air Force Base.

The Bidens will be joined by Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, who announced Friday that the administration would grant asylum to tens of thousands of undocumented Haitians living in the U.S.

The ``Temporary Protected Status'' will allow about 30,000 Haitians without legal immigration status, most in South Florida, to remain here legally for 18 months. They would also be able to apply for work permits, allowing them to earn money to send to family members in Haiti.
