Poll question: who LIKES Single Payer?

This pool has nothing to do with whether you think SP would pass the senate. Its my intention to prove that almost everyone here on DU thinks SP is the superior system. The problem, of course, is that it will not pass.

so, lets vote

4. SP rocks and would pass
SP would pass if our elected representatives actually represented the people that voted them in to office.

We seem to elect people that prefer to represent Corporations, as most of what they do seems to benefit Corporations and takes yet more stuff away from the people.

It's just plain unfair.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 11:19 AM by mkultra
Lots of polls rolled around talking about SP but they all quoted a "national health care" system. When PO was pitted against SP, only 23% of Americans preferred it. The problem is education.

8. Because we are being lied to and no one in a position to advance Single Payer, Universal Health Care
has done so.
There is just too much misinformation about the health care/insurance reform issues for most people to begin to sort things out.

43. It would pass if the people knew it costs less and covers everyone.
The problem is that our M$M won't tell them, the politicians are scared to tell them, and the only good journalism already said it once, long ago, and they don't want to repeat themselves.

What a crock.

12. I said it wouldn't pass BUT...
That is only a snapshot of where political reality is today. I strongly believe that the public role in provodoing health care insurance could be expanded now, that Democrats could be making a strong case FOR single payer now, and that we could have Single Payer within this decade if the Democratic Party had the guts to make the case for it and fight to win it.

19. 21 people can't possibly think that SP could pass
How far up one's ass does one's head have to be to think something so entirely uninformed. Oh, it could possibly squeak by in the House, but it wouldn't have a snowballs chance in Hell of passing in the Senate (current rules) and no thinking person can argue otherwise without me laughing directly into their faces.

21. SP is superior to what we have now.
Single payer is not the only other alternative, though. Lots of countries have multi-payer systems that work pretty well. The common factor is that none of them allow insurance companies to make profits from essential health care. They also use other measures to keep health care costs down.

The outcome of the reform debate in Washington was predetermined when it started from the premise that we have to keep the for-profit insurance companies in the game.

23. The idea of single payer seems great but...
given the attempts for blue dog Democrats to try to further restrict abortion through this bill gives me pause. Is every election year going to end up being about fighting over what medical procedures should and shouldn't be paid for? How do we get around this?

In terms of policy, there is really no question that it would be cheaper, cover everyone, and have tremendous bargaining power to lower costs.

33. wow! 21 people think it would have passed?!
Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 02:58 PM by elana i am
i guess that explains at least SOME of the weirdness going on around here.

i have a very simple perspective on this. if it COULD have it WOULD have. duh! ditto the public option. it's not lost on me that several dems didn't support the public option either. 6 senate dems and one independent were saying no to a public option throughout the process. and those are just the ones we knew about because they were public about it. i don't even know what the situation was in the house.

one of my personal philosophies is "intentions don't matter, only results." whether it's corruption, corporate sellouts, genuine aversion to single payer/public option, majority of constituency against public option, WHATEVER the reason, it doesn't really matter in the end if the votes aren't there.

BTW mkultra your statement about the poll completely contradicts your poll. if it's not about whether it would pass or not, then why did you make "it will pass" or "it won't pass" part of your poll options?

37. I support it, but it would depend how it was structured
Like with this, the devil is in the details. There would have to be a mechanism to ensure that it was affordable, and ideally, there would be some choice for consumers about how much coverage they wanted, perhaps with different percentages of their income for different levels of coverage.

I think I might prefer a system with a public option (but a more robust version than the one originally proposed) competing with private plans. I don't think I like the idea of consumers having no choice, whether it's no choice among crappy private plans or no choice but a government plan. I will admit that maybe my perspective is jaded because I have really good insurance (I work for a labor union) that I would not want to give up, even for Medicare.

I would like to see buying into Medicare become an option for everyone, but I don't know if I would want it to be the only option. Does that make sense?

41. It's the only solution.
A profit motive spread throughout each layer in the system makes it simply unaffordable. Single payer is the end game if we want to cover everyone. Otherwise we have to leave it as a luxury.

42. It's all in the marketing
Reagan would have done it.

Tax cuts for the rich made no sense whatsoever and should have been a hard sell during a recession, but Reagan went on TV and spoke with real conviction (about his loony idea) and told viewers to bombard their Congresscritters with phone calls and letters.

It worked.

Nobody in Establishment Washington has even TRIED to sell single payer.

It's not that the public wouldn't accept it.

It's that the lobbyists would withhold their bribes, and the poow wittwe Congwesscwitters would have to learn to relate to the People instead of the weasels on the Beltway cocktail circuit.
