3. Two giant yawns, then he checked his watch and then he nodded off and drooled
Letterman, here we come.

But I have to admit that I laughed out loud. It's Murphy's Law come to pay a visit.

4. Yes, but did some people here heard him?
Progress, progress, progress. The most important thing is to move forward all the time. That was MLK legacy. You don't throw 45 years worth of progress in health care, just because it's not perfect. And as the reverend who introduced him said: "They had 8 years to mess up this country, but they can't be patience while you're trying to fix it".

There won't be a better tool than Barack Obama for progressive agenda in many many years to come. The sooner "progressives" gets that, the faster things can move.

In any case, this was one of Obama's best speeches, maybe ever. I really did not expect that.

7. Progress???
....In the wrong direction.
No matter how much lipstick you put on this pig, it is STILL Mandates without a Public Option...something lESS than 35% of ALL voters support.

Who could have predicted that letting Olympia Snow and Joe Lieberman write the Health Care "Reform" Bill would piss off so many people? :shrug:

26. Yeah right. I'm a regressive.
I'm an OLD "FDR Democrat".
If THAT makes ME a "regressive" in YOUR eyes, so be it.
Name calling is the refuge of the ill informed.

In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being."---FDR

Mandates without a Public Option and subsidies FOR For Profit Health Insurance Corporations IS a Republican Health "Care" Plan.

But YOU call ME "regressive"?
I will wear that as a badge of pride coming from you.
LOL

31. "progressive" isn't defined by mob rule.
It's defined by principles of social and economic justice and by prioritizing the needs of low-income and working class individuals and families ahead of the wants and whims of the financial elite - popular or unpopular

8. It was a real purty speech.
Right up to the point where he not-so-subtly kept comparing the health insurance company protection act of 2010 with Emancipation and the Civil Rights Act. Then it just got downright stupid.

9. Didn't See It... But I'm Sure It Was "Purty" Because All Of His Speeches Are
PURTY! It's just what happens AFTER the speeches that really matters! Or, not so much these days!!

Don't like saying it, but can't hide from TRUTH! I DO wonder if HE GETS IT!!

11. I heard the speech and heard nothing that indicates he gets it at all.
Just when I thought he was ready to get into Frederick Douglass mode and use the "gifts of the fathers" allusion to call for some real change (for a change), he let the opportunity slip right on by and segued awkwardly into an old-fashioned "pie in the sky bye and bye" preacher-to-the-downtrodden refrain. Somewhere Joe Hill is spinning in his grave.

10. Your comment is downright stupid
He was there to speak about the upcoming MLK holiday so for him to juxtapose what was happening in that era to some of our struggles today was spot on. If you actually listened he did state that our struggles today do not reach the heights of the struggles past. Sometimes you just can't fix stupid.

18. I HEARD He Was Politiking For Martha Today... So Was It MLK OR
Martha?? I was watching The Tennis Channel, and OOPS, didn't watch the speech! While I don't like thinking that "our" Teddy's seat may go down, I'm thinking "THEY" should have paid MORE attention to the "uh base!"

Now, I could be wrong, but I DID hear he was going to stump for Martha and the speech may have truly been ONLY about MLK, so forgive me if I got my facts wrong. Anywho, I don't watch many of his speeches these days because the "follow through" has been so horrendous!

Perhaps Axelrod & Emanuel may be singing a different tune now, but STILL I WONDER!

And Puleeeeeze don't get me wrong, I was around when MLK got shot and I lived in Texas of all places! Even though I was young, I DID see the White/Black situation VERY clearly! Or should I say what it was back then... The Coloreds & The Whites! I saw water fountains that discriminated and when I asked my father about it he explained! My father made me VERY aware (as a white people) how discriminatory he felt it was and taught me to never see people as COLORS!

People are people, and the color of their skin matters NOT!! And all the rest of the LIBERAL agenda he taught me so well about too!! I came from a family of SIX girls and I was his political side-kick and even though he suffered a massive heart attack at 50, he survived only to die after he had another one!

My father was an Army "lifer" and a wonderful passionate LIBERAL who understood Civil Rights and DID THE CORRECT THING! I dare say he might be thinking like I think now, that there are NEW Democrats and they aren't like Democrats that I grew up with! And of course, I'm aware that politics has always had corruption up front and behind the scenes, but when it's so very blatant and in your face that we are being guided by some sort of "Robber Barron's" I have to draw the line!

21. As of the time of your post...
he had not yet reached Massachusetts. Air Force One was scheduled to land here in the "area" of 3:00, and then a motorcade to Northeastern University.

His speech for Martha is still a little bit in the future.

15. It's not always true that "We obviously should be united, arm in arm"
Wars of aggression, preemptive war (same thing), torture, corporate entrenchment, etc., are easier examples of where we should not be "arm in arm" if these are the things that will be tolerated. Wars of aggression and torture in particular must be set at "zero" - cutting the frequency of torture in half or something is not "progress" - it's likely more effective torture.

(I'm not saying "in half" is an Obama proposal, I'm just giving a hypothetical example so as not to distract from my point that unity is not always to be desired. Specific Obama examples might be given but that would distract from the point of principle here, plenty of specific threads on those subjects for people to weigh in are elsewhere on DU.)
