MA was not about Obama but about Red Sox Nation and hunkiness
Martha Coakley thinks Curt Schilling was a Yankee fan. Forkin' bloody sock unbelievable! Plus Brown looks great naked!

So those are the two main reasons Coakley lost. It had nothing whatsoever to do with Democrats being pussyfooting cowards who achieved nothing in one year despite promises they were going to turn the political world upside down and on its ear in the 2008 elections.

3. Time to get the irony meter checked
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 10:23 AM by AspenRose
I don't think those are the two main reasons by far (Coakley was a weak candidate, she made AWFUL choices, the higher up democrats weren't paying attention to Mass, a sense of entitlement regarding "Teddy's seat"), but they ARE minor considerations. People are stupid and pick candidates based on stupid, superficial things. How else did Sarah Palin get to be the VP candidate? It sure wasn't her political acumen!

Unfortunately we are in the era of TMZ

5. You got better reasons?
Well maybe bloody socks don't matter to you but they sure do to Red Sox Nation!

Plus, the hunky vote is definitely a factor. Everyone knows that LBJ won by a landslide due to his sexy looks.

27. Yes, talk with the voters not at them
Nobody in MA gave a damn about some naked picture from more than 20 years ago. It had no bearing on the outcome of the race. The stuff about the Red Sox confirmed a view of Martha Coakley that had already formed. It was not definitive, it was confirmative.

Brown won because he made the better pitch to voters that he was one of them and understood their concerns and fears. He recorded ads that used actual Boston voices complete with working class Boston accents. He was not ashamed of his voters or talk down to them. He celebrated them and their power to make change. He flattered them. It worked.

Ignore this or cover it with excuses at your peril.

Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 10:53 AM by Jersey Devil
They were all boring, lousy candidates who lost because of their own, personal faults and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the national political scene.

Now tap your heels together 3 times and you will be in Kansas.

19. Well, IF I were a Sox fan (God forgive me for the thought)
I wouldn't vote for anyone stupid enough to think Schilling was a Yankee fan. Can you imagine if Hillary had said, before her first Senate election, that Babe Ruth was a Cleveland Indian? Even Baby Ricky would have beaten her.

But seriously, my OP was intended as sarcasm. Sure Coakley was an awful candidate. But it happened in VA, NJ and now, of all places, MA. When are we going to get it? It was about doing nothing for a year after promising the world to a lot of desperate voters.

29. I agree with you about MA
but I think you are letting the right frame your opinion about VA & NJ. It isn't like Obama is the first president whose party lost the governorship of VA, it's been that way since 1977. And New Jersey seems to switch back and forth fairly routinely - 8 years Republican/8 years Democratic.

It wasn't the upset the media and the GOP make it out to be, and letting them frame it that way does just as much to undermine progress as anything else.

24. Yes, populist. Not doing enough about the big banks.
Obama started in with this recently with the "we want our money back" thing. Brown ran as a populist, not as a Rethug or teabagger. Of course, he really is a neo con type teabagger (just a bit more liberal on social issues). Dems did not do enough in the last year to address the public's anger about the economy, hence someone else can step in and tap into that. Indies and Dems who pay less attention then we do can easily be misled and just vote for someone of the same party that got us into this mess in the first place.

25. Yes, true, but on the other hand
we let them do it. Obama has the bully pulpit. Why doesn't he use it? Is he afraid of being called a "partisan"? Hell, we elected a fighter and to those who are completely frustrated now (read MA voters) all they got was a thinker. They want action and they want it NOW. Just like Haiti, food and medical relief will do no good a week or a month from now. It is needed immediately.

26. He is too willing to compromise. His cool and collected approach worked
well for the campaign, not so sure it is working in whipping Congress into shape. I am one of Obama's biggest supporters here, but not afraid of constructive criticism that can only help him and the Dem party.

The MA election wasn't about Obama the man, but about the Obama administration and the lackluster, pussy-footing Democrats.

In one year this administration has become the agent of compromise and sameness. People want different, and we haven't gotten that.

39. I don't know you.
You don't know me.

You said: "It had nothing whatsoever to do with Democrats being pussyfooting cowards who achieved nothing in one year despite promises they were going to turn the political world upside down and on its ear in the 2008 elections."

You didn't put any disclaimer or even a sarcasm smilie. Sure it is a stupid statement, but do you not think that there are many here who say something like this with belief and conviction? Don't blame me for not knowing what was in your head when you typed. If I wrote a post titled "Iraq war vital to American family safety', those who lit into me would be justified in thinking I was being serious since there are many who really think this. No matter how outrageous a statement may be on an open forum, you need to try to be a little clearer. Notice that many didn't "get it". I know it seems cool to be sarcastic without letting people know you are being sarcastic, and it feels so good to think that only the cool kids will get it, but in reality, you just wrote a very silly OP without any way for the reader to know you didn't mean it. How could I possibly know that you weren't one of "those"?

It is healthier to laugh once in a while. We lost an election, not our first born children.

Now, if you were really "cool" you'd also know that Curt Schilling's bloody sock was full of ketchup and not real blood.

41. true dat
but it wasn't so much what she had going for her (or didn't), it was what she DID with what she had going for her.

she didn't drive around MA, pressing flesh, she was mostly absentee, she said some unforgivable things (schilling), and she had an entitlement mindset.

if you look at her on paper, she's about equivalent to brown (lawyer, longtime ma resident, decent job history). it was the execution that sucked.
