Barack Obama is out of touch.

I don't think it's Obama who is out of touch.

15. By creating a unitary executive that skirts all laws?
No thanks. That kind of "effective" we don't need.

We are not used to seeing Congress do what the Constitution mandated it to do: make laws. It's not a pretty picture. But for eight years, all we saw was the WH run roughshod over that constitutional imperative. We began to believe the President just snaps his (or her) fingers and Congress bows down and obeys. It's not actually supposed to work like that. I think we've forgotten.

because that happened and guess what?

no Plan B to go to.

so we've had a media circus of confusion as they embarassingly dither around trying to come up with a Plan B.

no I don't want to see more of that, no thank you.

85. Obviously it is the Senate which is an annoying dinosaur... it should be abolished.
Too bad Obama didn't have more experience with the... Senate... or he might've... had a better thought out plan to cope with... a chess master's long-game plan... well, he's young... of only his VP had some more experience with the Senate...

How the hell do a pair of ex-Senators, with an ex-Senator as Secretary of State, claim with any legitimacy to not have been able to devise a plan in advance for dealing with getting a bill through the Senate when they should've all known in advance that that was going to be the choke point of passing legislation?

How do you blame this cock-up on the Senate, and not the ex-Senators in the Executive Branch that prioritized this "policy"?

Ohh, right. Conveniently glib excuse #29...

Or are you proposing that the Senate should be allowed to become extinct like a dinosaur.... or the Reichstag?

38. Barack Obama is achieving the art of the possible that is
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 09:32 PM by FrenchieCat
what our politics are about.

He's quite sane and in touch...

Meanwhile some of us are totally out to lunch.

He wasn't ever gonna be a tall tan Kucinich.....
Kucinich lost....big.
so the Banks will not be padlocked,
the Insurance companies will not be bankrupted,
the wars won't end tomorrow,
and we won't have a single health payer instituted anytime very soon...

Those are the realities...
and those who don't accept them....
well, they will be unhappy forever, I would guess....

Meanwhile, and Barack Obama will continue to make the changes that he can,
and history will bear him out as being a President who, even in times of grave adversity,
got shit done.

There will be a possible footnote in the history books about the whiners
who piled-on his back relentlessly day after day, both conservative and progressive...
just like there has always been.

49. I'm not sure....but,
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 10:13 PM by FrenchieCat
if we end up having avoided a deep depression,
the American auto companies rescued,
the Iraq war wounded down,
Guatanamo closed,
Torture specifically outlawed,
Terror not the way that government keeps citizens in line,
The Afghanistan War on a near sane footing with an end in sight,
Health Care policies improved, even if the problems are not totally solved,
the world seeing us as allies again,
Nukes significantly reduced,
Environmental issues addressed,
Science elevated,
Education rethinked,
Labor seen as a friend,
Student loans federalized,
Banking companies with more regulations on them then before,
Haiti helped greatly,
No longer on war footing with Iran,
good solid supreme court justices appointed,
Net neutrality saved,
and yes, more transparency to government than ever before....

by the end of his first term,
no matter what the vocal critics say on a day to day basis,
that will be quite a list, and I'm sure there will be more added
as we go.

Those of us sane ones who try to look at the big picture,
instead of wanting each day
for this President to do and say
exactly what we would wish are doing fine....
We appreciate what is going on....and history will bear us out.

Sorry.

we are going to loose seats in the house and senate in the fall. look at the models. Political Science shows up that the incumbent has only gained seats in off year elections in 36,96,02 this is not any of those times. were going to loose about 3-5 in the senate and about 20-25 in the house. its going to be bad. but if the President Steps up and takes charge then we can stop the hemorrhage

82. I voted for and donated to Obama and probably will again in 2012
given no better primary candidate.

Obama has pissed away the political capital of two generations of Democrats in one year.

He self-identified as a "new democrat" post election and filled his cabinet with the DLC oriented that made HRC my least favorite Democratic in the primaries. The DLC is not for the people and is identical to neo-cons in foreign, social, and economic policy.

Rahm and his brother are losers for the common American and for the long term good of the nation.

Geithner and Summmers and Bernanke are nightmares and this is from my education and professional fields

Vilsack and Salazar are likewise nightmares. Obama is doing with the National Forests what were the dreams of GWB under MSM cover.

I do not know much about education except a BS and MBA from Cal and think that charter schools, vouchers, etc undermine education in intent and financially. Democrats would be aghast at Arne Duncan under a GOP POTUS.

You deal with your perceptions; more long term Democrats will agree with me.

and now he is never going to. Bipartisanship was pursued at expense of the people. Politics was placed above people and a price was paid with our lives, and we had no choice about paying it.

The sad part is it isn't even good politics.

44. This OP reminds me of General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett from Blackadder.
"If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through."

59. Stephen Fry is awesome.
He was great with Hugh Laurie in their show, he was great in Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster, and even his novels are outstanding. :)

50. Oh, stop. Now you're just being absurd.
It sounds like you're advocating a president who's inflexible and refuses to adapt to changing circumstances.

Which, at this point, could be interpreted to mean you want the Obama administration to fail, ironically enough.

I think you need to ask yourself what exactly is it that you're wedded to, anymore? Party? Personality? Personal fable?

Whatever it is, it doesn't seem healthy for anyone... the people, the party or the president.

55. I disagree with you. I would like President Obama to try something new.
"Idiotic bullshit" is a meaningless term, so I don't have a comment on that hope.

I don't think it's Obama who is out of touch.

If the claim from the link, "Barack Obama conveyed to Robert Gibbs that he was surprised and frustrated by the Massachusetts race." is true, then he is obviously a little out of touch.

61. I fear our President is a pathological people pleaser
surrounded by fawning sycophants. If he is honestly surprised by the results of this special election he is either being ill served by those around him or he is intentionally ignorant of the facts.

58. We know you want him to be just like Bush
I think we get that.

You keep advocating what you're advocating my lil moderate conservative. You're gonna wind up with more MA elections where the left just stays home. You seem incapable of listening to it as well. Bush had the same characteristic and drove the Republicans into the ground.

Stand proud.

73. I informally polled all my progressive NY and SF Bay Area friends, and you are right...
The noises we hear, growing in anger and in volume, are not representative of progressives in general.

Out of touch, I think you nailed it.

And, fortunately, Obama is smarter than to let the noises mis-direct him into failure.

97.  hmm. A bit too late for that. Remember it was going to be such a disaster if we didn't pass HCR?
Amazing how one day things are an urgent priority and the next they are shelved as of no importance. Sort of like the principles some expound on the campaign trail only to replace them with politcal expedience.

74. I don't know about that
I think the KOS post is over the top - but I think a course correction is needed. I am not disappointed in our President at all - I think he has been doing the best he can with the hand he was dealt and the Congress he has. I do think that it is apparent that the bipartisanship, compromise path isn't working. I think he needs to changes some policy and priorities to become more progressive. I also think he and the DNC need way better marketing strategies. Too much is being put on hold for HC and we're looking at a not so great bill. good yeah - kinda - for some... I'll still support it - although with a sigh and a wish that it could have been better - or even less (less when it comes to mandates if there is no PO and less when it comes to the tax on HC plans) So pass it or put it on hold and make some "bipartisan" incremental gains within the next month. it is sucking all the attention.

pass a transportation bill
pass a jobs bill
work on fair trade
work on a safer food supply - promote more buy local & organic/natural initiatives
pass the Kerry bill that address offshore tax havens
end DADT
and hire some better PR people in the WH and DNC
just get all progressive and promote the hell out of it. that's my 2 cents. I know its easy for me to just write it on a message board.. but those are my thoughts anyway.

86. Don't you mean: "I hope the President keeps doing what he's doing, or does something different..."
"because no matter what the President does, it is the right thing to do, because he is the President, and when a Democratic President does something, that something is Right." ?

Sort of the ProSense corollary to the Nixon axiom which has, ironically, been re-inforced by Obama... which by your own corollary makes the Nixon axiom also correct. By definition.

Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 02:00 AM by Hippo_Tron
The fact is that people have unrealistic expectations and when he cant fix this mess that he inherited overnight, his poll numbers are going to drop. That's beyond his control.

What he can do is remind voters that the Republicans are not a good alternative.
