Stupak: Senate health plan will fail in House
Better to start over after Brown election, Michigan congressman says

In the wake of Tuesday’s Republican Senate win in Massachusetts, any effort to jam the Senate version of the health care reform bill through the House of Representatives will fail, a Michigan congressman predicted Wednesday.

Republican Scott Brown’s victory for a seat held for 47 years by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy breaks the Democratic super majority in the Senate and will allow GOP filibusters to put the breaks on bills, such as health care reform. Some had called for the House of Representatives to merely vote on the Senate version of the health care bill, but U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a Menomenee Democrat, said it won’t happen.

“I don’t think you can find 100 votes in the House for that bill,” he said. Stupak, the author of a controversial amendment in the House version of the bill which contained more restrictive language against abortion, said there are so many other fatal flaws in the Senate bill that abortion isn’t even an issue at this point.

He has decided to not run for Gov of Michigan. We're stuck with him.

4. Actually, no
he came up with language that got a version of HCR (which was far more equitable in who was going to pay for it) through the House, without having to do anything like the Louisiana Purchase or the Cornhusker Kickback, or the Lieberman cave-in.

Both sides of Congress had legislation that would not fully fund abortion, even if Coakley had won, that would be part of the final bill as signed by the President. By the way, the Senate bill contains conscience clause language that is virtually identical to the issue that Coakley hammered Brown on. Yet, she said she was for that bill.

There is just not a willingness to pay for elective abortion in America, even if a majority of people are not in favor of outlawing it. The HCR process has merely reflected this.

5. He's not going anywhere
His district won't go any more liberal than him. Very conservative for the most part. It's either him or a Republican.

2. I'm not as concerned about Brown as I am about the tax in this bill...

3. Stupak is a fuckwad but he's right about the House not supporting the Senate Bill...
from what i've read.

I'm expected a more lean, pared-down bill with a few reform items. Almost zero chance of large-scale sweeping overhaul many of us had hoped for.
