Justice Alito's 'You lie' moment? (Politico)
Justice Alito's 'You lie' moment?

POLITICO's Kasie Hunt, who's in the House chamber, reports that Justice Samuel Alito mouthed the words "not true" when Obama criticized the Supreme Court's campaign finance decision.

" Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections," Obama said. "Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong."

The shot of the black-robed Supreme Court justices, stone faced, was priceless.

Chuck Schumer stood up behind the justices and clapped vigorously while Alito shook his head and quietly mouthed his discontent.

4. Burning the 5 in effigy (or in their robes) would be better ...
... but a public reprimand right in their faces is a good start.

7. not exactly a "you lie" moment.
obama was directing a criticism squarely at 5 particular people, and alito was one of them. him mouthing something defensive is rather different than wilson bursting out with a criticism of obama when obama was merely describing his own proposals.

that said, alito can go f*ck himself as far as i'm concerned.

32. They sit stone faced through every SOTU ..... which is what makes this a big deal.
Alito is supposed to act like a statue during the SOTU ... he now has no party ... that's what the life-time appointment is supposed to mean.

So, with his action, he gave himself away.

But the fact that they sat their stone faced is not new .. its expected.

How embarrassing to have to sit next to Roberts, Kennedy and Alito.

21. the whole decision was a lie, just like bush v. gore
quite a spectacle, indeed, but one can hardly expect him to back down, having decided to sign on to such a ridiculous decision.

and remember Obama's consideration when he muffed the swearing in.

I think that Roberts takes protocol issues seriously.

24. Isn't Roberts too partisan to do so?
The course of action you describe is more something Obama does, in his zealous persuit of bipartisanship.

29. "Alito's 'Not True' Was Out of Line; Court Deserves Obama Smack"
<snip>

.."So, kudos to Barack Obama, that former constitutional law professor, for saying it right to the justices' faces last night.

"With all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that, I believe, will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections.

"I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests or, worse, by foreign entities," said the president. "They should be decided by the American people."

<snip>

"The Court deserved the smackdown it got from the President of the United States last night, and Justice Sam Alito's rude protest--this year's Joe Wilson outburst--was just further proof of what a bunch of political hacks the justices have become."

30. Those three guilty justices did not like their public spanking and rebuke.
Double the size of the supreme court. Congress can do that. Send 9 new Dems to join the 4 there and let the GOP stooges on the court spend their remaining days on the court writing dissenting opinions.

31. This what you get for quoting politico
“The President’s swipe at the Supreme Court was a breach of decorum, and represents the worst of Washington politics — scapegoating ‘special interest’ bogeymen for all that ails Washington in attempt to silence the diverse range of speakers in our democracy,” said Bradley A. Smith, chairman of the Center for Competitive Politics, in The Corner blog on Nationalreview.com.

"Center for competitive politics" at national review?
