he was clear eyed, but called the republicans out. I think he did a good job of enumerating what his administration HAS done, and he really repeated the message that the mess he was left was tremendous.

You can try and "Frame" my feelings like the republicans do. But if you look at my post history you will see that I NEVER have said I don't "like" the President. I would love to meet him at a Barbeque, I like him and he has a nice family. But as for his policies they don't win me over. And I ALWAYS talk POLICY. What is your problem with that?

that he IS MODERATE, the better off you'll be. Being 'progressive' is NOT his claim to fame and NEVER HAS BEEN. Your candidate LOST and the country has spoken. Get. Over. it. already.
edit to add: Moderate does NOT mean Republican. Stop spewing misinformation.

again and again. The part where the chamber was dead silent and Obama was "dead" serious. That was the most powerful part of his speech.
But it will be ignored as the pundits dissect and parse every little nuance to make the point THEY want to make. As they ignore the message.

But was it a good speech? C'mon, do lobbyists control Congress? Of course it was a good speech. Can he give a bad one?

77. I don't want to see tax cuts. I want to see massive tax increases. |
|
The wealthy had 90% to 70%of their income taxed for decades in the middle 20th century, which were considered America's "Golden Years" by conservatives. And the economy boomed. Obama should have given a "what have the wealthy done for us lately?" speech and pointed out how the middle class has shrunk as tax cuts have gone to the wealthiest. He should have pointed out ESPECIALLY how corporations have done nothing for the American worker but downsize them as they merged, outsourced, hid assets in offshore accounts, taken massive tax breaks, capital gain tax cuts, CEO obscene bonuses, and generally gorged themselves on the middle class. The people are already angry at fat cat bankers, insurance companies, morgage companies, CEOs, etc. Working them up into a frenzy wouldn't have been that hard.
And the Rethugs would have looked silly defending the rich and yelling out about "class warfare." After all, their only plan and mantra for doing anything for the economy is tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts. To the wealthiest.
Obama should have announced that he was increasing the tax rate for the wealthy and corporations to over 50% unless they created quality jobs in the U.S. Vilifying and demonizing the opposition has worked so well for Republicans. He should have pointed out how that would have filled the revenue coffers and shrank the deficit.
And any corporations that sought to escape by moving away would be punished severely by import taxes on goods and services.
Like I said, the opposition wins by painting us as the bad guys. Calling us fascists and Nazis. And that's when we're trying to HELP middle class Americans. Obama should have used the bully pulpit to announce a massive tax increase on the wealthy and corporations.
And as someone pointed out, if the corporations want to be treated as persons, they should be taxed as such. A lot.

and I was once in your position, so please don't put words in my mouth....The Democratic party's apparent "decision" to basically address the "middle class" instead of the poor, is not one I support.

He's already proved he can talk. Talk is cheap. He needs to start doing lots more for Main Street than for Wall Street, Big Insurance, Big Pharma. He needs to walk the walk. I'm skeptical much will really happen with Rahm still in the room.
Also - why is defense spending immune to his freeze? Why is this still a sacred cow, there are mountains of waste there. If you look at a pie chart of our expenditures you can see what a black hole this is.
Once he ends the costly and counter productive wars and passes a much better health care bill that the one the Senate passed I'll join into the cheerleading and take a swig of the Kool Aid if it hasn't been all guzzled down today.

94. For him, speech is easy. However, doing is...harder. |
|
Every frickin' minute, he had to pause to allow the members of Congress applaud and cheer him on. Now, we shall see if he upholds what he promised or gives any good reason why he wants to change his mind.
I congratulate him on wanting to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", among the most useless, discriminatory laws the US has ever passed (and I can't believe Clinton, not Reagan or Bush 41, signed it), wanting to aid the middle class more, and planning on budgeting "like those poor families".

I particularly liked is smack done of the repubs for creating this huge mess in the first place and the obstructionism in the 2nd. Watching how the chamber responded to various parts of O's speech is always entertaining, particularly when he looked dead at the repubs and told them "I thought you would applaud that" - tax cuts for the middle class...turned away and then turned back and chuckled at them, eliciting a few laughs and hand claps from the red side. Obama is the FDR of our age and THEY hate him for it.

120. It was a great speech |
|
Except for the "clean nuke and coal" and the spending freeze, I think he nailed every point. It was refreshing to see Obama the candidate again.
But as many have said already, waiting for the second half. Had he done all of this before now, this could have been his speech:
"It was a great year- we turned the economy around, brought millions back to work, broke up the banks and other institutions that were 'too big to fail' and agressively prosecuted both the war criminals of the past Administration and the people on Wall St. that saw the United States Government as their personal ATM machine. We have made great strides in clean energy technology, and are working toward 100% employment. This was not easy, but we are not planning to stop there."

with Billy Tauzin, and many other lobbyists while campaigning against doing business with them is insulting. As is quoting the very WH logs that prove he met with Tauzin every two weeks for months before making the request that the Drug Reimportation Bill be pulled. And the many Obama appointments who were given "exemptions" from the lobbyist exclusion prove the point that the anti lobbyist rehtoric is just that rhetoric. In fact , Obama, after campaigning steadfastly against the appointment of lobbyist, proposed one of the most famous lobbyists of all, Tom Daschle, for health sec.Daschle only withdrew because of tax problems. Yeah, I know THIS time the president REALLY means it.

132. My Canadian friends and I wish Obama could be our Prime Minister |
|
Our current one, Stephen Harper, is so worried about the polls and his decline in popularity that he closed down our Parliament for 3 months in a Prorogue ... which costs s $134 million dollars and any bills in progress are killed and have to start all over again.
He didn't want to face the questions about the torture in Afghanistan.
Obama is very much loved up here in Canada.

are never the problem as he's a very good orator. The problem O has is walking the talk. He's got a pattern of saying one thing and behind closed doors,(literally speaking), doing exactly something completely different i.e. back door deals with corporate lobbyists. I won't be convinced until I see some real "change" in his leadership. So, K&R for the speech being good, but that's where it ends for me.

I didn't like the Presidents speech. I don't feel good when I listen to him because I felt good when he was campaigning, thinking he was going to bring "Hope & Change" but, in my opinion (if that's okay) HE DIDN'T and HE ISN'T.
I can not in good conscience get behind his rhetoric anymore. He is more about form than substance. It pains me to see how many people respond to rhetoric from our President even as his actions betray his real commitments. Furthermore, in my opinion (if that's okay) you can not blame Congress alone, nor can you blame a Republican minority. I'll let you infer where the responsibility lies because if I tell you my post may disappear.

by speeches. Remember this one: "I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank." Barack Obama, October 27, 2007.
This thread and the gullibility displayed in it makes you just shake your head and say WTF. Are people really this desperate?
