I am not all that familiar with American politics until Bill Clinton came on
the scene. After the State of the Union Speech, is the President required to stay on and listen to the opposing party rebuttal?

Thank you.

11. Fuck yes, but they bombed a psychiatric hospital, I remember that
so distinctly. And then they assassinated Walter Rodney. The fucking US has a history in destabilizing progressive countries but yet they supported Forbes Burnham for 20 years and kicked Cheddie Jagan (he was too socialist) to the curb!

2. Don't know, but this rebuttal was in Virginia. And what a show, I tell you!!!
Why, it was a professionally staged, GOP operatives only, mini SOTU address.

It was even in an architectural miniature of the US congress chamber, semi-circular seating and aisles.

And a black woman and asian man behind the Governor.

....

But I've never heard of the expectation that the president stay on or listen to any rebuttal.

6. Thank you as I was hoping in my heart of hearts that he would ignore
the effing GOP rebuttal. They sat there like little monuments, they should be ashamed of themselves!

3. No.
The SOTU speech is a requirement of the constitution. The rebuttal is just a fairly recent (and pointless) tradition.

9. The rebuttal is not in front of Congress
It is usually pre-recorded and aired after the SOTU. This one was unique in that it was live and held in front of an audience in Virginia. I'm somewhat surprised that is legal in Virginia. So, the President never listens to the rebuttal live.

13. commonwealth state
meaning to many here, none of the common shall have wealth :D (at least that's our running joke)

I don't know if there are actually any laws on it, but VA is a crazy place with some very strange laws.

14. Thanks for your response, I am from the Caribbean, you know the colonalised states
and we need to be more colonalised according to Pat Robertson in order to be more civilised. I was just asking a simple question ... Is the President of the US required to hang around to hear the opposing party's rebuttal and I got my answer.

Thank you.
