1. Probably a wait-and-see attitude
from the last few times he's promised this.

2. My guess as well.
It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the speech, too. It needs some post-game substance from staff.

But I'm encouraged.

3. Glad it was mentioned
I think it's a good start. But let's see what happens. Actions count more to me. Let's hope they can get this done. When they do, that's when I will celebrate.

4. You can't talk when you're holding your breath
hoping that this time is different. There comes a time when one wants to believe the words but can't until the actions match.

5. Because no one on this board can BITCH about it.. so why start a thread about it?
Honestly.. I thought the same thing.. I thought there would be 30 threads on it when I jumped on this morning.. and yours was the first i've seen.

The Obama hate is so thick here, that the guy could deliver gold bars to some DU members, and they'd start a thread about how the President left a pile of heavy metal on their porch and now they have to move it. Makes me wanna :puke:

14. Just out of curiosity - is there anything Obama's done that you haven't
liked?

Plenty of folks here, who constantly get accused of "hating" have posted things both good and bad - there are some things Obama has been way out in front about and I like the way he handled it. Others, especially keeping promises to the GLBT community, I've bitched about plenty. That's not hate - it's opinion and I doubt most folks are going to agree with every single thing any POTUS does (or Speaker or Majority Leader) - they're people, not demi-gods.

So I have to ask you - can you point out any place that you've been critical of him? Because hero worship is equally :puke: worthy

25. Ah.. so supporting the DEMOCRATIC President is now "Hero Worship"?
No, there isn't a lot he has done yet that I'd say I hate. There is a lot more I hope he will do - but a year in, I give him time ('cause he still has 3 years left to go).

So, where is your OP about how happy you are that he is asking for DODT to be put on his desk? That's my point.. not many posts on here today about people being happy when he does something that they want (finally). It's.. "Let's move on to the next issue that he hasn't resolved and start on that".

Many here are no better then Republicans. Obama does something they agree with, but rather then give him credit or acknowledge it at all, they just move on to the next thing they don't like. Republicans are doing that today with Nuclear Energy, Small Business Tax Cuts, and the spending freeze. He asked for the repeal of DODT, so they can still be pissed too. People here? Well, he asked for the DADT repeal, but he's comprimising on spending and allowing potential Nuclear energy - so he's worthless.

He can't win.. no matter what he does. Alot of people in that position would just give up.. i'm glad he doesn't.

15. Hearings were going to happen soon anyway...most likely in Feb. now
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 10:41 AM by Jennicut
Levin says they are well on their way here. But to see him say and it and Gates clapping for it was important. If he worked on the military first and then goes to Congress he has bypassed Clinton's problems with getting gays in the military in the first place. It is much more popular now then back in 1993, more support in the public now. I think the ban will be lifted by the end of the year. If not, he faces more backlash from gays and people who are not but support gay rights (like me).

16. I will give them until the end of the year.
I will be satisfied if it's done by at least the end of this year (2010), since it was included in this year's speech. No reason why they can't attempt to get it done this year.

And I imagine some people who are employed by the military might appreciate a move that would make it less likely for them to be fired for an arbitrary reason.

35. They can, but they don't.
And I imagine most people are too concerned about the economy, and about either finding a job or hanging onto the one they have now that they are unable to consider anything else right now. Lots of people out there are scared shitless. They are more concerned about keeping a roof over their heads and feeding their children. Discussing DADT is the last thing on their minds right now. Not saying it's right, but that is how it is.

I am more concerned about not losing my house and everything else right now. I'm sorry if that upsets you. But, hey, if you want to make a few mortgage payments for me, or give me a job, I'll be happy to spend more time thinking about DADT.

2-3 THOUSAND people (at least) are being laid off every day thanks to the economy being in the shitter, and would probably love to keep their jobs, too. I am just saying that there are an awful lot of us who are not discussing it because we have our own problems trying to stay afloat.

I understand why people want to repeal DADT. And, I sympathize with the gay and lesbians in the military. Honest. I do. I always thought DADT was bullshit. But, far, far more people have other far more pressing priorities right now--like trying to stay afloat. That's all I was trying to say.
