WH On Alito's Sour SOTU Reaction: Ain't Democracy Grand?
Ben Frumin | January 28, 2010, 12:51PM

Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton responded today to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's sour reaction last night to the president's criticism of a recent court decision to strike down a key campaign finance provision, according to a pool report.

"One of the great things about our democracy is that powerful members of the government at high levels can disagree in public and in private," Burton said. "This is one of those cases."

During last night's State of the Union address, the president said, "with all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections."

Alito cringed, pursed his lips, shook his head from side to side in apparent disagreement and appeared to mouth "not true."

2. Thanks for posting this
I don't find it that big of a deal that Alito had a reaction.

This is America. President Obama expressed his opinion of the ruling and then Alito did. We'll find out who was right soon enough. Reality isn't going to lie.

But I don't know why there is such an outcry on here about a little head shake. I find it a lot scarier than the head shake in question.

4. Really. Someone shakes their head and mouths "not true"
and you think the republic is in danger.

Who cares if he shook his head and mouthed something?

If the tables were turned, and let's say, a more liberal ruling had been mentioned in a state of the union by the shrub as being a potential disaster and Bader Ginsberg, shook her head and mouthed "not true," would we all be in such a tizzy?

I think not.

Time is going to show what the ruling will do to campaign finance. Head shake or no head shake.

And FWIW, I was appalled, ashamed and disgusted by the "you lie" screech by Wilson during the Presidential address.

I just don't equate that abhorrent display of childish behavior with a head shake.

being surprised at that reaction is just plain stupid. I had no intention of deep linking such as you have done.
