Mouthing the words "Not true",with no discernible intent to publicly mock the president, is really pretty different than yelling "You Lie" in a silent room with the nation watching. He had no idea he was on camera at that moment.

Do you really think that every Dem in the room agreed with everything the president said? That no one ever shook their head in polite disagreement? Rolled their eyes? Come on DU this is pretty silly stuff.

1. Had no idea he was on camera? Beg to differ.
Everyone in that room is on camera, do you think that the cameras just happened to catch his big moment? If he didn't realize that, he's too damned dumb to be a SC Justice.

He effectively called the President a liar during the SOTU address. If that ain't disrespect, then I don't know what is.

2. Just another case of the media making the story instead of reporting on things that matter n/t

3. I have to agree about the rudeness
I doubt he even knew the camera was on him when he said it.

What leaves my mouth hanging open, though, is the stupidity of thinking that what Obama was saying wasn't true. :wow:

9. I dislike Alito, hate the recent decision, but President Obama suggested that foreign . . .
. . . corporations will now have the green light to contribute to U. S. election campaigns. I am not sure that suggestion is true. Please correct me if I am wrong.

13. They only have to put together a US subsidiary
Shouldn't be so hard for them to do.

4. I think he spoke volumes by breaking SCOTUS protocol at an STOU, even with
that mild reaction. The others looked like they'd been placed there by Madame Tussaud's - which is as it should be. He meant to make a statement. And he did.

5. For the tiny bit it's worth, I agree with that.
He probably even knew a camera would notice it, but he didn't do it in a way to interrupt the speech, and it clearly wasn't a planned action, like Wilson's. If it were one of ours, we'd be applauding and trying to name a star after him. It didn't bother me much.

Now the rest of what Alito does bothers me greatly...

10. You disagree with that?
You don't remember Cindy Sheehan, do you?

15. I would not appreciate any liberal Supreme Court Justice doing what Alito did
And I would say so here at DU. We see similar at DU a lot when one of "ours" in government gets stupid.

I've disagreed with the president and said so. There's nothing new here.

It's one thing for Helen Thomas to mutter under her breath at a press conference. But Justice Ginsberg? Please, no.

6. It has nothing to do with disrespecting the President
It is not the judicial equivalent of Joe Wilson. Joe Wilson is a politician, Samuel Alito is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Judges have an ethical duty not only to be impartial but also to appear impartial in their public comments. For a justice to make a public display of partisanship is a big deal from a standpoint of legal ethics. Is it the end of the world? No. But it's a big deal.

11. I don't believe his reaction had anything to do with partisanship.
He disagreed with Obama's characterization of the decision.

8. Whether it is "silly" or not, the larger question is, "Can it be used to attack the pukes?" If
the answer is yes, then, by all means, use it.

Does the enemy gain ground with their "silly" attacks? Of course they do.

They impeached a president (and crippled an administration for almost two full terms) over something silly.

Why would you want to take any weapon out of our arsenal? If it works, use it.

12. he wears the robe and wields the power- If he can't reign in his own
personal opinion at the SOTU he's unfit for the position.

no one 'elected' him. His JOB is to be impartial, and he was there as part of his job. He FAILED.

imo

14. It's easier to make a mountain out of a molehil....
that is why stuff such as the Alito comment distract us from what is really going on...

It's easier to show that comment is slow motion ad nauseum instead of interviewing smart, engaging people about real issues...
