Inside Scoop on Brown's Fundraising
By Emily Cadei | January 29, 2010 2:12 PM

GOP online strategist Patrick Ruffini, whose firm provided the online fundraising technology for Sen.-elect Scott Brown's (R-Mass.) special election campaign, details Brown's online fundraising success in a Friday Web post.

In the final two weeks of the race, Brown raised more than $12 million online from over 157,000 individual donations via Engage's iContribute online fundraising platform, an amazing sum for a candidate who raised just $1.2 million in the previous three months.

Ruffini wrote, "It was December 29th when people nationally awoke to the opportunity of a pickup in Massachusetts and began donating in large numbers. For the next three weeks, things not only didn't let up, they grew exponentially."

Ruffini cited three major moments that triggered online fundraising surges: a Dec. 29 Boston Herald article that indicated the national Republican party was not going to help Brown's campaign financially; the Jan. 6 release of a Rasmussen Reports poll showing Brown down by 9 percent; and the Jan. 11 "Moneybomb" appeal by the Brown campaign that raised $1.3 million.

Ultimately, the Moneybomb turned out to be the weakest online fundaising day in that tumultuous week before the special election, Ruffini wrote, who said the "strongest came on Friday, when the campaign raised $2.2 million from over 25,000 people."
